You went from working on several Hotel Transylvania features for Sony Pictures Animation to a hugely successful reboot of Samurai Jack. We know you’ve got more things brewing at Sony, but can you tell us how the idea for this non-verbal prehistoric adventure came about?

Genndy Tartakovksy:


It started out originally as more of a kids’ show about a boy riding a dinosaur, and then slowly, as I developed it over the years, it started to take shape as something more mature. Then, after the success of the final season of Samurai Jack for Adult Swim, it really solidified as a more adult, mature take on this primitive man and caveman relationship.


What were some of the visual influences for the show?


They were mostly 1970s sci fi art. Frank Frazetta, Moebius and Robert E. Howard’s Conan were the main influences. We wanted to make something raw, organic, brutal and visceral.
A retro sci-fi illustration type of aesthetic combined with our love of Frazetta, Bambi, Wizards and horror comics.


Where is the animation produced and which tools are used to produce it?


The animation is produced here in Los Angeles and in Paris, France at Studio La Cachette. We use TVPaint, Photoshop and Animation Frameworks eXtension.


How did it feel to go back to the world of TV animation after working on so many Sony movies?


Well, it’s something that I have been really enjoying. We first did it with the final season of Samurai Jack, when I just finished Hotel Transylvania 2 and then came to Cartoon Network to do Jack. It’s a great change of pace, as well, as working with 2D animation is always amazing.


How many people work on Primal and what was been the biggest challenge of producing this series?


We have about 40 or so overall in Los Angeles and Paris.
I think just drawing-wise it’s the most challenging because there are real animals (dinosaurs) and humans, so there’s a level of draftsmanship and realistic anatomy that we wanted. But, then at the same time, we wanted to push the style and posing to be unique and comic book-y. Then, of course, there is no dialogue in the show, so you come across some storytelling challenges. We actually tell some pretty complex stories, so to do that clearly without dialogue can be sometimes difficult.


What do you love about creating animated for older audiences, vis-à-vis creating animation for children and family audiences?


I mostly enjoy the freedom to do things that aren’t so black and white, so we can leave some things for the audience to figure out for themselves. We are clear on what we are trying to say, but then we can leave just enough for interpretation. Also, since this is an action show, there are no real boundaries for violence and brutality. Even though I am not a fan of gore, the show is set in the primordial world, and it’s very grisly out there.


What is your take on the animation scene in 2019? Is there such a thing as too much content?


No, I think it’s just about quality and uniqueness. It’s nice because there’s something for everyone, but the great shows always find their own place and audience. Of course, it will be more difficult to stand out, for sure.


Finally, can you offer some advice for those who want to find animation jobs today?


Be diverse in your drawing style and ability. Have passion and love for what you want to do, and work your ass off!

mamma che robba, questa serie ha proprio le vestigia dell'ultima stagione di Samurai Jack (o oserei dire dei suoi migliori intenti) di fatto

abbiamo anche qui una scena di contemplazione di suicidio

un momento strano da cui incominciare una storia sopratutto senza un bagaglio ed un affezione per vivere davvero lo shock

ho trovato addirittura assurdo che la scena dell'uccisione della famiglia sia stata di molte volte più brutale di quella dei due cuccioli, non voglio sminuirla ma ha un certo grado di comicità per quanto grottesca considerando che ci avevano anche appena servito una scena tenerona un pò fuori luogo

piaciuti da morire i primi momenti in cui ci introducono il protagonista che deve guardarsi da praticamente qualsiasi cosa (bellissimo lo pterosauro l'abbiano reso pericoloso una volta a terra invece che farlo comportare come un qualche uccello rapace) dove mi aspettavo un introduzione facilona e banale in cui fosse dipinto da badass e re della collina (tipo Goku che sbraga dinosauri con sberle e caccia pesci giganti fin da neonato)

leggermente infastidito dalle proporzioni non sempre rispettate per carità stiamo parlando di Tartakovsky e tutto deve essere al servizio dello stile ma con gli scontri che si fanno così dinamici e precisi saltà un pò all'occhio

certo non ci potevo credere alle dimensioni che ci avevano fatto intravedere del dinosauro colossale, e una cosa che mi è piaciuta dello scontro è quanto sia stato molto ispirato ad un videogioco dove letteralmente i due protagonisti imparano il pattern del nemico, tutto in modo assolutamente non verbale, peccato che si sia andati per un colpo finale che dire fortunato è dir poco, forse avrebbe cozzato ma avrei preferito un montaggio per farci intendere uno scontro molto lungo e quindi anche di resistenza

ma poi non ho capito ma non erano tre i dino cattivi più piccoli?  può essere che l'ultimo fosse uno dei tre cresciuto perchè dai corni sul muso sembrerebbe proprio rassomigliare uno di loro  e se la mammina fosse ancora li fuori in libertà potrebbe avere senso siccome in questo modo avremmo un altro personaggio la cui famiglia è stata completamente uccisa

momenti estremamente lenti ed atmosferici (mi sarebbe piaciuto avere qualche elemento animato nei fondali) unito ad altri estremamente veloci ed intensi fenomenale la colonna sonora :shock:  ancora sono molto curioso di questa deriva che ha come punto di partenza più un finale perchè è davvero imprevedibile, l'unica cosa che mi sembra certa è

qui davvero episodio muscolare a livello di animazioni tante sequenze di caccia e lotta dove come detto nel primo avevo lamentato qualche scelta un pò troppo minimalista

per gli eventi dell'episodio inizialmente un pò costernato, ma alla fine ho davvero realizzato l'intento di non far collaborare e convivere i due protagonisti in maniera banale ed automatica come ci si sarebbe potuti aspettare alla fine del primo episodio

secondo me si è proprio tratta ispirazione da una componente naturalistica, una competizione passiva e psicologica tra chi è il padrone e chi "l'animaletto" in maniera molto interessante tant'è che riesce a sorreggere tutto l'episodio

anche in quest'episodio un accenno di proporzioni sbagliate

il T-rex abbia delle reazioni di stupore, dubbio e cerchi di usare colpi non letali e non saprei se paura o comunque in guardia da qualche genere di ostilità dopo il flashback (in generale non mi aspettavo avremmo ritoccato l'argomento della dipartita) con il gioco delle ombre davvero di grande phatos quella sequenza, inoltre proprio da waifu :ghigno:  il fatto che "russi"

incredibile di meglio in meglio, la sequenza d'apertura mi ha fatto davvero star male

davvero dura da guardare così impietoso e segnato il destino per il vecchio mammoth poi quando si è messo a lanciare quei barriti così accorati

 in un certo senso per quanto brutale l'intervento dei nostri protagonisti gli ha evitato un lento calvario

poi plot twist e

doppio plot twist che proprio non ho visto arrivare, ma per prima cosa il flashback che ci becchiamo anche a quest'episodio ma ancora più grande esteso e dettagliato, per la prima volta ci viene dato di conoscere sul serio uno dei figli di Spear momento quasi rilassato e sereno e che nonostante Fang al suo fianco non potrà mai sostituire

per invece il ritorno del branco proprio non me l'aspettavo poi quando si sono messi a sniffare (scena davvero dettagliata e ricca di phatos) ero convinto al cento per cento fossero lì per vendetta invece per la zanna, combattimento davvero figo ... (finalmente vediamo pure usare le due dita al T-rex

 il momento che aspettavo da una vita) comunque è scioccante il reveal perchè dal primo momento che si era visto il leader del branco ci aveva dato una sensazione intimidatoria e badass quando proprio sul finale nel momento clue si fa in modo di ricordarci che elefanti e mammoth hanno una struttura matriarcale che fa calzare questo lato sensibile, chissene anche se non hanno ucciso i predatori (che è un pensiero che verrebbe quasi automatico) era appunto in un certo senso già segnato il loro compagno per cui nessun rancore però almeno non dissacratelo portandogli via la zanna

tra l'altro stanno trattando benissimo le interazioni con il T-rex non risultano mai banali o scontate

quando non ci pensa nemmeno per un momento a trainare la slitta con le provviste :ghigno:  o gli lancia il pezzo di carne a Spear senza degnarlo di alcun riguardo quando è ancora tutto ombroso nonostante la caccia andata a buon fine  una convivenza davvero particolare non c'è che dire, ma sono contento che sia stata la scelta presa (oddio pure quando si è scrollata di dosso la pelliccia )

cambio di ambientazione onestamente un pò brusco  dove stanno andando tra l'altro?? :morris:

però non mi dispiace stiano sperimentando e cavolo vorrei vederla la versione cinematografica che hanno mandato al cinema giusto perchè non riesco a spiegarmi il minutaggio se sono in totale 10 episodi da 20 minuti abbondanti senza neanche intro :morris:

questo episodio si presta moltissimo al tema halloween  sicuramente il più bizzarro quasi sognante e per questo stranamente leggero un pò devo essere sincero la cosa mi ha disturbato anche se non tantissimo alla fine a dimostrazione di che macchina ben rodata siano diventati i due protagonisti

spero però che non vada sprecato il pizzico di worldbuilding che si è visto in quest'episodio

ero davvero convinto che gli ominidi avrebbero giocato qualche ruolo siccome ci viene descritto (sempre attraverso immagini ed per questo che questa serie è stupenda) come siano costretti a vivere nel terrore rischiando per fino di morire di fame, ma sarebbe stato altrettanto strano vederli tutt'a un tratto mettere su una resistenza imitando Spear e sopratutto la sua lancia, ma appunto se li rivedremo più avanti ci conto in un loro passaggio evolutivo

la vera critica che ho da fare è che in quest'episodio mi sembrato che gli animali si siano comportati un pò troppo senza istinto di conservazione letteralmente a farsi uccidere con i nostri personaggi a sembrare gli unici con un pò di sale in zucca e spirito di osservazione

molto buffa la scena di Fang a tentare la scalata (come detto episodio leggero anche per questi momenti) apprezzato il territorio diviso per predatori che ci viene mostrato (letteralmente il meme dell'erba alta ) ed il rapporto simbiotico tra l'aracnide gigante e i vampiri, tra l'altro uccidendo il primo e forse influenzando gli ominidi abbiamo per la prima volta le azioni dei protagonisti aver un influenza più su larga scala quando fin ad adesso si è trattato di episodi molto intimi (a questo giro appunto niente flashback per esempio)

e quindi ... a quanto pare ultimo episodio, mi era sfuggito che fossero previsti solo i primi 5 (che sono quindi quelli mostrati a Los Angeles) con la seconda parte ancora da data da destinarsi quindi lo possiamo considerare un finale di stagione  di certo non mi aspettavo

l'episodio in spiaggia e la Naruto run  (pure dat icona del mouse )

mi hanno colto molto di sorpresa i versi di Spear quasi ad un accenno di conversazione, leggera sovversione delle aspettative con la scena dei pesci

ed una cosa che in effetti avevo notato ossia la mancanza di interiora nell'episodio precedente a cui viene messa una ben voluta pezza

Non pensavo che trovare un topic nel forum dove si parlasse di Primal! Ho appena finito di vedere i primi cinque episodi e omioddiogenndytiamo, credo di aver assunto un certo amore per il modo di fare animazione del tipo dopo Samurai Jack. Qui cose tipiche del suo modo di fare come lunghe sezioni senza dialoghi dove a farla da padrone sono gli sfondi e scene di azione coreografate in modo spettacolare sono veramente portate all'ennesima potenza, e per quanto mi riguarda è intrattenimento allo stato puro. A questo giro ho pure apprezzato come hanno gestito il rapporto tra Spear e Fang (se di rapporto si può parlare); anche se la violenza e la serietà delle situazioni che devono affrontare la fanno da padrone ho sorriso più di una volta davanti a quelle rare scene più leggere che si concentrano su loro due. Promosso a pieni voti e in attesa dei prossimi episodi!

Ne approfitto per fare una domanda a @Razgriz, ho visto che in questa sezione ci sono altri topic dedicati a vari canali e provider di show animati americani; per caso c'è una lista dove posso vedere quelli presenti? Il tasto cerca del forum non aiuta granché, mi interessava vedere se c'era uno spazio dedicato anche alle serie animate sotto Disney (tipo Marco & Star contro le Forze del Male, Amphibia e DuckTales anche se per quest'ultimo c'è tecnicamente un topic in sezione televisione) e quelle originali Netflix (tipo Hilda).

non credo proprio (cioè ho aperto il topic per Dreamworks, Sony Pictures e Nickelodeon e questo è quanto ) però lentamente credo di aprire altri topic (su Hilda ci stavo proprio pensando forse mi sbrigherò con l'uscita del trailer della S.2),  di Duck Tales c'è il topic in TV  (per Disney al momento è un pò sporadica come serie interessanti quindi la sto trascurando anche se ho dato più di un occhiata a diverse loro serie)

I never realized how much we don’t watch and we just listen, with “Primal, you kind of just get drawn in and you forget. And if you turn away, you’re going to miss a whole bunch.

With everybody used to multitasking on their phones and everything, it’ll be interesting to see the effect


It would drive me insane, because animation is so labor intensive. We produce every frame and all these drawings, everybody’s great work


It’s something that took me a while to kind of just accept. It’s the way people watch TV now. We’re always doing other things at the same time



When people were watching "Samurai Jack" and would pinpoint their favorite sequences, they were always the ones that had no dialogue. The very visual ones, and I thought, "Well, can I actually make a whole series of just these types of sequences?"

The show became emotional, people started to read their own feelings into it without being told how to feel, which was a big deal. The subtlety of everything became heightened, the extra subtle acting that we weren’t really used to seeing in television before — or never had the opportunity to do — that helped it all breathe.



One of the big challenges was to not make it funny, we really wanted to try to be true to the tone. We wanted it to be pulpy and fantastical



There’s nothing like somebody’s moving drawings, because you’re creating this illusion. You’re creating life through these moving drawings, and it’s fantastic

fenomenale mai apprezzato particolarmente il design del grinch e simili, ma qui hanno reso i personaggi davvero molto piacevoli alla vista, ed anche la qualità dell'animazione è davvero pulita e fluida, inoltre temevo avessero intenzione di volare basso con poco più che dei corti invece c'è una storia e potremmo avere anche altre stagioni tutto molto fico

Each episode will focus on a different character from school, like class clown Banana Joe, the teleporting ghost Carrie, and even the teachers of Elmore Junior High, as Darwin is set the task of determining which teacher is most deserving of a precious slot in the class yearbook.

Miniserie in 3 Parti animata da Powerhouse Animation con James Wan come produttore esecutivo

[COMUNICATO]


HBO Max announced today at the WarnerMedia Television Critics Association (TCA) day, a greenlight for a three-part animated mini-series Aquaman: King of Atlantis that will be executive produced by James Wan(Aquaman and the upcoming Malignant) through his Atomic Monster production company. Based on the classic DC character created by Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris, each of the standalone episodes will have a unique storyline following the adventures of Aquaman as protector of the deep.
The series begins with Aquaman’s first day on the job as king of Atlantis and he’s got a LOT of catching up to do. Luckily, he has his two royal advisors to back him up – Vulko, the scholar, and Mera, the water controlling warrior-princess. Between dealing with unscrupulous surface dwellers, elder evils from beyond time and his own half-brother who wants to overthrow him, Aquaman is going to have to rise to the challenge and prove to his subjects, and to himself, that he’s the right man for the trident!

sto sentendo davvero brutte cose non me l'aspettavo proprio  ok che ero più dalla barricata del nuovo film di Spongebob ma questa sembrava un progettone oltre che una reinterpretazione così nuova e fresca di Scooby-Doo ma avrebbero dovuto a quanto pare limitarsi a renderla una storia delle origini come hanno continuamente fatto credere nel marketing
