The rumors were right. Bethesda today announced Wolfenstein: The New Order, a new entry in the seminal first-person shooter series heading to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-generation consoles during Q4 2013.

The New Order is set in 1960 after the Nazis won World War II. Gamers play as the familiar American war hero B.J. Blazkowicz and are tasked with launching an "impossible counter-offensive" against the Nazi powers that have taken over the world.

Set in Europe, The New Order will have players infiltrating Nazi strongholds and battling legions of enemies, while taking control of "super weapons" that the Nazis have used to dominate earth--"and beyond," Bethesda teased.

The New Order is in development at MachineGames, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bethesda parent company Zenimax. The studio was established in 2009 by the founders of Starbreeze Studios (Chronicles of Riddick) before being acquired by Zenimax in 2010.

The most recent entry in the series was 2009's Wolfenstein, which was developed by Raven Software and published by Activision.

Nessun multiplayer per il nuovo Wolfenstein

Gli sviluppatori hanno recentemente confermato che il nuovo Wolfenstein: The New Order, creato da Bethesda e MachineGames, sarà incentrato solo sul single-player e pertanto non si è ritenuto opportuno inserire una componente multiplayer.

Se gli sviluppatori sono molto eccitati all'idea di lavorare su quella che è una delle serie più amate nel mondo dei videogiochi, altri non sono così entusiasti di questo nuovo titolo. Warren Spector, designer di titoli come Deus Ex, ha infatti commentato così:

 

"Il mondo ha davvero bisogno di un altro titolo di Wolfenstein? Io credo proprio di no. Sono davvero stufo di giochi di questo tipo".

Lo sviluppatore di Deus Ex ed Epic Mickey ha chiesto scusa alla squadra di MachineGames, attualmente al lavoro sul nuovo Wolfenstein, per i commenti recentemente rilasciati riguardo a questo titolo:
"Mi dispiace. Devo alla squadra di Wolfenstein delle scuse. Non stavo cercando di insultare voi o il vostro gioco, ho totale rispetto per chiunque tenti di fare un gioco perchè so quanto è difficile ... E a tutti coloro che mi hanno fatto notare che io non conosco abbastanza il gioco per giudicare, beh , avevate ragione. Considerate questo come un mio mea culpa".

- Elementi adventure e notevole varietà di situazioni

The New Order sembra poter offrire tutto ciò che un fan del marchio Wolfenstein possa desiderare. Una struttura parzialmente adventure con missioni variegate e ispirate, sparatorie impegnative e frenetiche con armi potentissime in dual wield in mappe estese, e un gameplay old style ritoccato con le giuste innovazioni. Che sia il caso di aspettarsi uno shooter capace di distinguersi dalla massa e di ridare lustro a questo marchio leggendario? Speriamo bene.
