The game was originally pitched to Microsoft by Rockstar to be an exclusive for the Xbox console. However, they turned down the offer believing that the studio wasn't capable, the user interface wasn't that good and that the previous entries in the franchise didn't sell well.

There are two Street Fighter characters that can be seen in some of the stage backgrounds. Guile appears during the boss fight with Freddie in France, and Chun-Li appears in the first stage, where she can be seen eating ramen.

It is possible for Mario to get a Game Over during the game's closing credits. Finishing the game with 120 stars, a Bee Mushroom will appear in the Tall Trunk section of the credits. Collecting it and flying to the right in the Freezy Flake section of the credits, it's possible to get enough height to bypass the top boundary, thus resulting in a Game Over. The credits will roll, but are invisible behind a black screen.

Defeating Allen in Mission 3 without taking any damage or by killing him with just grenades, a tiny hidden UFO can be seen towards the top of the screen.

In a 2001 V-Jump magazine interview with the game's art director Yusuke Naora, he was asked where the idea for an "asian" themed world came from? He responded: "Let’s see… after the cyberpunk and “near-future” settings of VII and VIII, we returned to our roots with FFIX. So the question became, what should we do next…? And to be honest, that question vexed us. Around that time, I happened to be looking through some books and travel pamphlets and randomly thought to myself, “you know, Asia is really nice too…” (laughs) There haven’t been many fantasy games in that kind of setting. There have been games set in China, or with a Chinese atmosphere, but nothing with a Southeast Asian or similar setting. So I thought I’d try drawing some pictures to flesh out this vision I had, when lo and behold, I read Kazushige Nojima’s script and by chance it turned out to have the same feeling. Then it was like, OK, now we’ve got to do this. (laughs) We all brainstorm ideas on our own, but when we meet up and share them, the ideas that happen to be similar to each other are always good ones."

In the North American version of Pandora's Tower, there is a bug that freezes the game if you try to access the 11th and 12th towers once the 13th tower opens. Strangely, this bug is only found in the North American version of the game, and hasn't been found in the European, Japanese or Australian versions.

In a 1992 interview with the game's animator Toshiyuki Kubooka published in BEEP! Megadrive pre-release magazines, he was asked how working on a game like Lunar: The Silver Star compared to animation? He responded: "The character design itself is almost the same. However, because these characters need to be rendered in compressed, chibi-pixel form, you’ve got to make sure their basic shapes are distinct enough to make them immediately recognizable. This was my first time doing that kind of bonafide character design work, but I was pretty free to do what I wanted, and I had a good time. The animation work for Lunar was entrusted to Shunji Suzuki, who worked with me on Nadia."

The English version of Mana Khemia 2's title is actually a mistranslation. Mana Khemia 2's Japanese title is "マナケミア2 〜ãŠã¡ãŸå¦åœ’ã¨éŒ¬é‡‘術士ãŸã¡ã€œ", or "Mana Khemia 2: ~The Fallen Academy and the Alchemists". The Japanese title is also more reflective of the game's plot, as the story has more to do with an alchemy school's decline than it is with the decline of alchemy itself.
