Square Enix May Consider Multiplayer If They Make Dragon Quest Builders 2:

During the interview, Fujimoto is asked if Square Enix have plans to make other Dragon Quest Builders based on other titles from the series other than than the first one. “First, we’d like to have you all play it, and I’m sure there will be all kinds of requests, and if there’s anything that we can make happen for the next one, we’d surely like to, but if Dragon Quest 1 alone is enough then we’ll just leave it at that,” said Fujimoto. “As for making the next one, I’d like to think about it after getting more feedback.” He is then asked about possibly implementing multiplayer sometime in the future. “As far as Dragon Quest Builders 1 goes, it is not possible,” responded Fujimoto. “But if there’s enough demand, I’ll put it into consideration for the next title.

Dragon Quest Builders won the Gold Prize and Users Choice Prize at PlayStation Awards 2016. And during an interview after the ceremony, Square Enix director Kazuya Niinou and producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto made a brief comment about their next project.

Producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto: “We really heard a lot from the fans, such as good points, things they want improved, and we really heard a lot of ‘we want you to make a sequel!’ As part of the Dragon Quest series, I want to live up to the fans’ expectations, but what kind of thoughts do you have about that, Niinou-san? (Laughs.)”

Director Kazuya Niinou: “…There are a lot of things I can’t say unless Fujimoto-san says it, but as for what we can pick out now, I think we have to return the favor with a good game, and I want to work hard to for the time being to live up to your expectations.”

Square Enix announced Dragon Quest Builders 2 for PlayStation 4 and Switch at Dragon Quest Summer Festival 2017 in Tokyo today.
Unlike the first Dragon Quest Builders, the sequel will feature slopes, the ability to dive underwater, a greater limit to the amount of blocks you can stack (it has increased three-fold, both high and low), the ability to fill high places with water, create waterfalls, glide down from high places with a glider, and supports four-person multiplayer.

As for what the setting is like, Square Enix gave the keywords “fellow travelers” and “young Malroth.” Malroth, also known as Sidoh, is the final enemy players face in Dragon Quest II.

A release window as not announced.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 will be subtitled “The God of Destruction Malroth and the Vacant Island” in Japan, the latest issue of Weekly Jump reveals. Its release date and price are still to be announced.

A blurb in the magazine notes that “God of Destruction Malroth” is the name of the evil god that appeared in Dragon Quest II. Regarding whether or not there is a connection, the magazine teases, “Look forward to future reports!”

Weekly Jump also reveals the backstory and Akira Toriyama-illustrated character designs for the male and female protagonists. The protagonist is the descendant of the legendary builder that once saved the world. He or she has the same power to build things as their ancestor, but is still inexperienced. While relying on their “Builder’s Book,” their goal is to become a full-fledged builder.

The game itself is set on “Vacant Island,” a huge, unpopulated island without houses or towns where the protagonist washes ashore, and where they will adventure and build things to create a bustling island. However, on this island where there appears to be nothing, what looks to be a man-made temple can be seen in the mountains.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 is in development for PlayStation 4 and Switch.

Square Enix shared the latest details on Dragon Quest Builders 2 in this week’s issue of Jump magazine, where we got some info on the story and how it is directly connected to Dragon Quest II. [Thanks, @Aterufa-Iomo.]
In Dragon Quest II, the corrupt cleric Hargon and the God of Destruction Malroth were defeated by the ancestors of the Hero, and peace was brought back to the world. However, a religious group that wants to pick up where Hargon left off has arrived and brought a new terror.

In the original Dragon Quest II, Hargon is initially established as the main antagonist and is for the most part of the game. Upon defeating him, he uses his last breath to offer himself to Malroth as a sacrifice and dies. This summons the God of Destruction Malroth, which ends up being the final battle of the game.

After Hargon was defeated, peace was disturbed by the Hargon Order, that has been bringing destruction to various towns and castles across the lands and with most of it in ruins, the remainder of humanity is scarce.

The Order’s objective is to destroy the world, and the Builder that has the power of creation is a bother to the group, so they decided to capture the protagonist and throw him/her into jail.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 is in development for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. In case you missed it, we previously reported that Dragon Quest Builders 2 will support up to 4-player multiplayer. You can also check here for a look at some screenshots and details for Malroth.
