A new job listing on the LittleBigPlanet website suggests that Sony are at least looking into, if not already working on, an MMO based in the LBP universe.
So there I was, casually reading the latest of the regular LittleBigPlanet community updates on the PlayStation Blog when I noticed that Media Molecule (and the rest of the LBP studios – Double Eleven, United Front etc.) are hiring. Reading through the listings, which include gameplay, tools and network positions – there’s not too much exciting, until you get to the page for Lead Community Manager.

Under the ‘requirements’ section is “a strong knowledge and passion for games, ideally to include social gaming and MMO’s”. Now sure, the LBP franchise is easily the most family-friendly in Sony’s stable (sorry Kratos!), but the existing entries are pretty solid and challenging platformers, not what you’d describe as “social games”. And, while the series is pretty well-known for its online capabilities, you wouldn’t really describe any of the games so far as MMOs.

Now of course this could just be Sony looking for someone with a lot of experience dealing with creative and commited communities like the one that surrounds Media Molecule’s baby, but given the company’s recent experiments with console MMOs (in the form of Free Realms, DCUO and Home), and testing of the free-to-play waters (MAG, Killzone 3), it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to suggest some kind of ‘LittleBigUniverse’ project is brewing somewhere at the Worldwide Studios. Looking for a community manager with MMO experience now suggests that such a project might already be pretty far along.

Media Molecule working 'ambitious' new titles:

According to job listings on its site, the Sony developer has multiple projects on the way.

"At Media Molecule, we are currently working on brand new IPs, even more ambitious than LBP was when it was conceived 6 years ago," it teases.

The developer has multiple listings, one that specifies working on its "next AAA title", and another that'll have the candidate working on "different projects on different platforms".

Different platforms, eh? Considering MM is a Sony dev, we would assume PS3 and Vita are those platforms - but could this be the first sniff of a PS4 game from the LBP house?

The listings mention that they're "very early in the process", so don't expect to hear anything more on these for a while.

Tearaway remains the main focus, but the developer is currently making progress on an unannounced project.
“We’re working on a second project right now, and that’s very much in an R&D phase,” confirmed Media Molecule’s Mark Healy in an interview with *********.

“The focus is Tearaway, but Media Molecule is a lot more than 15 people,” added co-founder Alex Evans.

“We call it in a holding pattern,” he continued, “because the focus is on Tearaway. I’m not saying that from a press angle – our focus is on Tearaway and making it awesome. The other project is very much in an early stage and is a toy. You don’t need to worry about it.”
Altro progetto per i MM,ancora alle primissime fasi.

Media Molecule talks a bit about its secret title:

Tearaway isn’t the only title Media Molecule is working on. The company has two other groups that are busy with content – the studio management team as well as one making an “unannounced R&D project”.

Alex Evans, co-founder of Media Molecule, spoke a bit about the mysterious game, noting that it will “completely reimagine how people can create”.

Evans said:

“An interesting thing about Media Molecule is that we actually enjoy tearing everything up and doing something we couldn’t have imagined doing before. That’s the positive of all this. As a studio, we want to keep everything fresh. We don’t want to be known as just the LittleBigPlanet studio, much as we love that. I think of Media Molecule more as creative gaming. For Tearaway, we’ve imagined creative gaming within a much more gamey game. For the R&D project, it’s creative gaming; go back to those two words and completely reimagine how people can create. It’s scary, but it’s exhilarating.”
