GTAV's weather has preset conditions: sunny, rainy, overcast. "Generally speaking, it's either rainy or sunny or whatever," says Aaron Garbut. "This game is much more granular." Cloud systems move independently in GTAVI , shaped by wind, humidity, fog, time of day and season. A player standing in bright sunshine may be able to see a storm forming in the distance: dark clouds, lightning flashes, the haze of falling rain. Drive towards it and the environment changes gradually. Roads become wet; buildings drip after the storm has passed; surfaces dry at different rates. These systems interact with the rest of the world. Wind affects trees, clouds and waves. Islands and buildings can shelter stretches of water, changing the way boats move through bays and along shorelines. "Depending on where you are in your boat," Garbut says, "you'll skip over that stuff or get really rocked around by it." Fly a plane or helicopter through a storm and the weather can buffet the aircraft; remain inside severe conditions and it may even sustain light damage. Pedestrians respond, too, seeking shelter as weather deteriorates. "Everything comes down to these granular levels," Garbut says, "and then it just interacts."
