Disgaea RPG Studio Nippon Ichi in Financial Trouble, Withholding Salaries From Employees


Disgaea RPG studio, Nippon Ichi Software, is in dire financial straits and cannot afford to pay staff after the mobile title was de-platformed.


According to reports from various Japanese news outlets (and relayed through Twitter user HDKirin), Nippon Ichi Software is in dire financial straits. The development and publishing company has been suffering for quite some time due to poor sales of their titles in Japan. And now it seems, due to debilitating issues surrounding their latest mobile title Disgaea RPG, NIS can no longer afford to pay their employees:

In order to raise enough money to pay for the development staff’s labor costs, NIS has resorted to an MS (Moving Strike) Warrant. A MS Warrant is a stock term, a method of raising funds that otherwise cannot be acquired through the normal means of borrowing from banks or investors, due to already being deficit.

The company raises money buy selling their stocks at a cheap price. Security companies profit greatly from buying said cheaper stocks while that company’s investors are ultimately the ones who lose the most since the stocks they currently hold lose money and lead to the stock’s overall decline.

Japanese site Ha-Navi confirms that Disgaea RPG is the main cause for this last decline that resulted in the company unable to pay wages. On March 19th of this year, the title — a collaboration effort between NIS and Forward Works (a subsidiary of Sony) — began service.

However, since that launch the game had to undergo long-term maintenance due to its many and major issues and was taken down. Service has not been restored as of this writing. Naturally, as revenue cannot be gained from a game no longer available on the market, the company has no way to recoup their losses and pay the staff’s salaries.

The Forward Works official blog released a statement on the issue, apologizing to players for the ongoing issue. The official Twitter account also released a status update, encouraging players who purchased paid items by March 31st to submit their inquiry to a support email account. Considering this tweet came out on May 17th, a full two months after the game launched and shut down, it seems all parties involved are reluctant to refund the money.

Considering the high quality of the original Disgaea 5 and its re-release on the Nintendo Switch, it’s a shame that NIS is facing such a difficult time. It is not clear how this news will impact the company’s upcoming titles.

Del resto visto i giochi che han sviluppato dopo la gen PS2/PSP non c'è da proprio nulla di cui stupirsi... Al di là di Disgaea l'unico altro titolo buono che han fatto è stato Coven. Il resto...  :sleep:

The Witch and the Hundred Knight per me merita assai, e mi è anche discretamente piaciuto The Awakened Fate Ultimatum xD. Con gli ultimi sconti giapponesi ho preso The Witch and the Hundred Knight 2, e con quelli dello scorso anno The Guided Fate Paradox .

Però si, se mi chiedi dell'ultimo periodo tra quei 3 che ho giocato quale sia il migliore allora rispondo senza dubbio Coven.

Il disastroso Disgaea RPG per cellulare, lanciato mesi fa e poi entrato in una fase ininterrotta di maintenance da cui non è più uscito, riprenderà a funzionare (inizierà a funzionare?) in autunno.

Questo scherzetto sta costando carissimo alla NIS.

Nippon Ichi Software and ForwardWorks took to Twitter today to update people on the situation regarding Disgaea RPG, the RPG-styled mobile spinoff that was endlessly stuck in maintenance hell and was subsequently taken off for repair work.

According to the statement posted on the official Disgaea RPG Twitter, the repairs are currently underway, and currently they foresee the game restarting in Fall 2019. Originally, they stated that the repairs would take around three months, and it seems it will be a while longer than that.

As for the Twitter account, they will continue to post updates and info on the game, so they hope people will continue to maintain their interest in the game.

Nippon Ichi parla della sua strategia di espansione nel mercato mobile.

The latest issue of Weekly Famtisu has a feature on Nippon Ichi Software, including the reveal of a Game Variety smartphone app due out as a free download soon in Japan, and an interview with company CEO Sohei Niikawa.

Game Variety is a portal app for other downloadable apps from Nippon Ichi Software. The app allows you to search and purchase other apps. Apps planned for release through this platform include Shin Hayarigami, Yomawari, Shogi, Go, Reversi, Mahjong, Chess, and more.

Here are the notable tidbits from the magazine’s interview with Niikawa:

• Niikawa believes the company needs a system to keep many types of users engaged in Nippon Ichi Software’s games in order to keep the company in business for many years to come.
  
• There is a large demand for portable game consoles in Japan. Therefore, reevaluating smartphones as a type of portable game console, Niikawa felt the need to adapt Nippon Ichi Software’s games to the platform as well.
  
• Nippon Ichi Software plans to release one or two smartphone titles each month.
  
• Games from the original PlayStation era are planned for release. There are also plans to borrow titles from other companies to put on this platform.
  
• Nippon Ichi Software is also looking into releasing Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (The Puppet Princess of Marl Kingdom). If it can call awaken hope through smartphones, it may lead to the development of a sequel.
  
• In the future, Nippon Ichi Software would like to launch new titles simultaneously on smartphones and consoles. It is currently building an environment to make that possible.
  
• The company’s basis will continue to be consoles. Mobile is a segue to expand its reach to the market.
  
• It is looking into adapting Disgaea as well.

Nippon Ichi Software announced Shoujo Jigoku no Doku Musume, an action RPG where there is a hell for every girl, for PlayStation 4 and Switch in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu. It will launch on June 25 in Japan for 6,980 yen.

Shoujo Jigoku no Doku Musume, which roughly translates to Poison Princess of Maiden Hells, features character designs by Madoka Hanashiro, who previously did character designs for The Witch and the Hundred Knight 2 and The Princess Guide.

• Hells have Poison Swamps born from the thoughts of girls. The protagonist—a man with one arm melted down to the bone—cooperates with the Poison Princess in order to return to the living world.
  
• Communication parts with the Poison Princess have multiple stories.
  
• Delusions realized by the reckless thoughts of the Poison Princess wander the hells. There are many variations of these Delusions, such as those that attack at close-range and those that launch sneak attacks.
  
• The Poison Swamps can be moved by the Poison Princess, and absorb the poison that it surrounds. During this time, you can also defeat enemies caught in the swamps.
  
• There are various attack methods, such as fusing the Poison Princess in your arm, and firing bullets like a third-person shooter.

■ Prologue

After an encounter in Hell, the Poison Maiden and the protagonist (you) become two hearts in one body.

The Poison Maiden wants the protagonist’s body, while the protagonist wants to return to the world of the living. In order achieve their desires, they begin the “purification of Hell” with their sights set on reaching “Heaven.”

“If you reach Heaven, your any one wish will be granted.”

“To do so, you must collect stickers from Hells.”

In their journey to reach Heaven, the protagonist will sometimes entrust full control of his body to the Poison Maiden, while at other times carry her on his arm. The tale that unfolds is the Hell story of the Poison Maiden and the protagonist.

Poison Maiden (voiced by Manami Numakura)

A girl who steals your body after you end up in Hell. She comes off as having a tough attitude, but is actually quite emotional and easily moved to tears. She urges you to go to Heaven, saying, “Let’s go to Heaven and ask to for you to be returned to the world of the living!” However, she really just wants to go to ask to have her own wish granted.

The player character who decides to purify Hell with the Poison Maiden. Even after realizing the Poison Maiden’s intentions to take his body, he still cooperates with her to find out why he ended up in Hell.

Girl in Black (voiced by Yuki Kawakami)

A girl with two hearts in one body that you encounter in Hell. She is a rival aiming for Heaven like yourself, but has a cheerful and determined attitude, and will even help you out from time to time. She was touched by the circumstances and motivations of her partner, the White Poison Maiden, and offered to help with the purification of Hell. She is kind-hearted and somewhat of a simpleton.

White Poison Maiden (voiced by Mina Takagawa)

A Poison Maiden who shares a body with the Girl in Black. She adores the Girl in Black and refers to her as “My Lady,” helping her to achieve her goal of reaching Heaven. Since the Girl in Black has a naive personality, the White Poison Maiden’s behavior often comes off guardian-like. She is calm and expressionless, and therefore not very sociable.

In Hell, “Higan Radio” will give you special stickers for each girl’s Hell that you successfully purify. It was announced that collecting five of these stickers, which are very valuable in this world, will allow you to go to Heaven. Each time you complete the purification of a girl’s Hell, a delivery person show up with a sticker.

As you collect poison, “Thoughtforms” that allow you to hear the girls’ voices will appear. By looking into a girl’s heart through a Thoughtform, you can get hints for purification in situations where you may be stuck.

A demoness who runs a gift shop near the Hell radio tower. However, since living beings rarely visit, she mainly acts as a “ferry” service to Heaven. She is profusely glamorous.

A very mysterious woman dressed in a suit as if in the guise of a man. She seems to know about the Protagonist, who has only just arrived in Hell, and the Poison Maiden. Her words often have hidden meaning.

Dark Poison Maiden (voiced by Yumi Hara)

A mysterious Poison Maiden you encounter in Hell. “Poison Maiden” usually refers to a Delusional Being who has become one with a living being, but she does not seem to have a partner of the living. She talks in a calm Kyoto dialect and seems to operate at her own pace, but her shrewd atmosphere is a bit unsettling.
