The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is a fantastic feat in the adventure narrative genre. There's a focus on character drama to make the cast more dynamic and a group of flesh-eating demons to keep your heart racing. Choices have a considerable impact, but there's room to play again and again, with accessible options to fine-tune the experience and a new camera system to enhance exploration. Alone or with friends, no matter how you play, a nightmare awaits.

God is a Geek - 8.5/10
The most surprising thing about House of Ashes is that it doesn't focus on trying to surprise. It's still mysterious and shocking, but it unashamedly presents its situation upfront and then lets us navigate further and further in. By doing away with trying to subvert expectations – like previous titles in the series have – it frees itself from some narrative shackles and instead focuses on the overall experience. The result is a very different game, faster-paced, with more adrenaline pumping as you smash those QTEs or make the tough calls. This new direction won't be for everyone, and whilst some of the narrative branches are incredibly interesting, the lack of completely different endings may disappoint some people.

GamesBeat - 8/10
I liked the production values in this game and the writing was good. The theme of the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" resonated several times during the gameplay, and it guided me during some difficult decisions. The creatures in the game look very threatening and they creeped me out enough that I really hated it when they were chasing my characters.

IGN - 8/10
In many respects, you know exactly what you're getting with The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes. It's a QTE-filled horrorfest that is often stretching against the limitations of its budget. The script could use some polish and the characters could be a little more outside the box. However, the claustrophobic scares work effectively, and the central mystery of House of Ashes signifies a return to what fans loved about Until Dawn.

DualShockers - 8/10
Supermassive has an incredible talent for creating gripping narratives of a horror persuasion, and despite some technical bumps in the sand, my retrospective opinion on House of Ashes still remains the same: It's a bloody good creature feature.

Game Informer - 7.5/10
The game largely avoids wading into a deeper political conversation outside of "war is bad" and "uniforms are just uniforms," which I believe is for the best. It ultimately serves to push the theme of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and works in a surface-level sense. I got the point without having to worry about Supermassive bungling its sensitive subject matter.
....
House of Ashes never came close to terrifying or surprising me, but I still found it a respectable thriller that should make for an entertaining night alone or with up to four friends passing the controller. If you've enjoyed the Anthology up to this point, you'll likely get a kick out of this too. But if you've been waiting for The Dark Pictures to reach the heights of Until Dawn, don't get your hopes up for another year

Worth Playing - 7/10
That basically sums up The Dark Pictures: Episode 3 - House of Ashes. It's a cheesy action-horror movie, except you can help characters survive (or die) with your button presses. It's not my favorite of the lot, but I was relatively engaged. It's an enjoyable enough B movie and feels like it would thrive the best as a multiplayer party game. If you've enjoyed the rest of the franchise so far, you'll enjoy House of Ashes because aside from some quality of life changes, it's largely in the same mold.

GamesRadar+ - 6/10
Horror fans are no stranger to weak sequels, and we tend to have a soft spot for ongoing series even when they have a bad day, and despite the issues, the truth is that even at its weakest, The Dark Pictures Anthology offers a unique "trapped in a horror movie" experience that nothing else does, and is accessible enough to make for intense couch co-op with some friends. It's not a great horror game, but it's a decent horror game, and sometimes that will do.

Destructoid - 6/10
My biggest hangup with House of Ashes is the less-than-ideal Iraq War backdrop and, related, a few of the characters, who are just plain unlikeable or dull rather than people you "love to hate" in that fun horror-movie way. Worth stressing: both elements are at their worse in the beginning. Things do improve. You aren't above ground for too terribly long, characters become more nuanced (or hey, you just get them killed off), and the story goes to some cool visual and thematic places that are unexpected for this series.
