[Le Monde] Arkane Lyon has until November 13 to find a buyer, 217 jobs are at risk

As internal consultations and negotiations draw to a close, two unions are warning of the impending demise of one of the biggest names in the French video game industry. They accuse the American company of making an "inconsistent" decision and displaying a "disrespectful" attitude.
The studio has known this since this summer, but the law requires Microsoft to find a buyer for the company within three months. The deadline for negotiations is set for November 13 ... and they reportedly aren't going very well.

Meanwhile, a union representative (who naturally finds the situation scandalous, given that the studio is in good financial health) believes that Blade is nearing the end of production and has what it takes to be a success.

Finally, as these deadlines approached, and after observing that "negotiations on the redundancy plan are going badly ," according to Simon, his union, along with the French Video Game Workers' Union (STJV), decided to raise the alarm about the studio's situation.

"Microsoft is leaving us no choice ," the union representative told Le Monde . On November 13, the official end date for consultations with the Social and Economic Committee (CSE) on the proposed closure, the company will have to make a decision.

In the meantime, the unions hope to buy more time "to give the discussions a better chance of reaching a conclusion ," according to the STJV, which is involved with the company but not an elected representative. "We remain hopeful of saving the studio and its jobs ," adds Simon, who, on behalf of Printemps écologique, has requested a postponement of the deadlines for negotiating the redundancy plan and searching for a buyer. According to the union representative, who is bound by certain confidentiality obligations, "several forms of takeover are being considered."

Microsoft declined to answer specific questions from Le Monde. "We continue to explore different options for Arkane as part of the ongoing French consultation process," the Redmond, Washington-based company stated in an email, without confirming or denying the planned closure. "We are keeping the works council and employees informed and are actively seeking a partner to support the next phase of development and enable the commercialization of the project."

A method agreement signed on July 24 by Arkane Studios SAS and its sole representative trade union, Printemps écologique, and published on August 10 on the government platform Legifrance, does indeed mention "the plan for the total and definitive cessation of the company's activities" and "the subsequent plan for the dismissal of all employees for economic reasons."

In another internal document publicly accessible since September, it is also stated that "the implementation of the project [for the complete and definitive cessation of the company's activities] is scheduled to begin at the end of 2026 and should extend into the first quarter of 2027." When contacted again on this subject, Microsoft had not responded at the time of publication.

Although negotiations are officially ongoing until Friday, October 30, the union has not ruled out ultimately challenging "the economic justification for the proposed closure in court." "This is in complete contradiction with what we've been told in the Works Council for years about the company's financial situation ," Simon complains. According to him, "Microsoft is looking to divest itself of Arkane, even though the studio is doing well, in order to save money and improve the profitability of its short-term investments."

"How can this be justified when Microsoft's annual net profits are in the hundreds of billions of dollars?" asks the STJV, which deplores the company's lack of transparency on this point. Printemps écologique also criticizes the group's "disrespectful" attitude and its "top-down decisions made from a great distance and brutally imposed on the studio . " "We are collateral victims of Xbox's change in strategy ," summarizes Simon, referring to it as "cannibalization . "

By communicating about the risk that this action-adventure game [Marvel's Blade], whose development began in 2022 and which was unveiled in a trailer in December 2023, might never see the light of day, Printemps écologique hopes to "gain the support of gamers." "It would be a monumental waste—artistically, humanly, and commercially ," says Simon, who states that the studio "is nearing the end" of production. And STJV adds: "We are proud of what has been produced. (...) We believe that the game, if it is released, will be a success."
