[1] Development of the Drifting Village: Rescued Castaways Add to the Base’s Strength
![]()
While Adol explores the Isle of Seiren, which is the setting of Ys VIII, a base for the other castaways that wash ashore the island called the “Drifting Village” will be built.
In its initial stage, the nothing exists in the Drifting Village surrounded by rocks. However, with Captain Barbaros and Dogi at its core, a variety of equipment essential to daily living, such as bedrooms and bedrooms, will be built, and the village’s appearance will continue to change dramatically.
Additionally, as you discover castaways on the island, you’ll take them back to the Drifting Village and its number of inhabitants will increase. Each castaway has their own special skills and knowledge, and their joining the village expands functionality. This triggers various changes in the Drifting Village, including special events.
![]()
When the Drifting Village’s farm is completed, you can plant crops. The harvest will be available as food supply for the castaways.
You can also talk to your party members in the Drifting Village, including Laxia, Sahad, and others who accompany Adol.
![]()

Using their power, Adol can remove these obstacles and develop a new exploration route.
—Example: Dogi helps remove a fallen tree.
![]()
A huge fallen tree blocks the path leading to a sandy beach. Adol, Laxia, and Sahad cannot move the tree, but by enlisting the strength of Dogi of the Drifting Village, players can remove the fallen trees and proceed to the sandy beach.
Little Paro also helps. When a new route is unlocked via a Support Event, the messenger parrot Little Paro flies around the area and will tell Adol and company about the location.

The event points in the area will be automatically put on the map when you receive the information from Little Paro, which will be a big help when you start exploring the new area.

[Drilling]
By combining together specific materials with a weapon you own, you can create a powerful new weapon. (After drilling, the newly created weapon is automatically changed in your equipment. Drilling also changes the weapon’s name.)

[Armor Creation]
Similar to strengthening and drilling, you can create armor for each character by bringing Cathleen specific materials.

After linking up with Military Police member Aaron, and after you advance the story some degree, he will establish an Industrial Arts Shop.
In the Industrial Arts Shop, different from Cathleen’s Blacksmithery, you can request Aaron create “Arm Armor” and “Accessories” that offer various stat boosts and special abilities.
Additionally, as Aaron is skilled with his hands, he as a special skill known as “Item Disassembly,” which lets him disassemble the items you bring him, such as equipment you no longer need, so you can reuse them as materials.

Generally each character can only learn one skill from Master Kong, but out of all the skills, these are on the pretty advanced side. The first time, a quest will show you Master Kong’s location, and if you have a “Ripe Mango” item, you can train with him. Counter-Attack Battles

![]()
—(2) The Counter-Attack Battle Begins
A group battle where enemy beasts rush onto your base begins. For the player, it is similar to a standard battle in that you’ll control Adol and the other playable characters while fighting against hordes of enemies approaching the base.
While in standard battles you’ll get a game over if your HP is lessened to 0, in the case of a Counter-Attack Battle, you’ll only fail if the enemy destroys your last line of defense, the “Defense Fortress,” in the depths of the battle area.
In addition to decoys that can disrupt enemy actions in the Counter-Attack Battle area, you can develop and strengthen the Drifting Village to take on Counter-Attack Battles more advantageously.
While Adol and his party are fighting, Dogi will lead his own “Dogi Side” team to protect a different entrance to the Drifting Village. Dogi Side fights automatically and its results are logged as scores for each castaway, which will also affect the stage result after the battle ends.

—Battle Progress Gauge
During a Counter-Attack Battle, a “Battle Progress Gauge” indicating Adol Side’s “Dominance” in battle is displayed on-screen. Since you’ll recover more HP and SP if the gauge is higher, it is important to win through the waves of battles and maintain Dominance.
—Castaway Support Skills
Outside of party members, castaways also have their own support skills that automatically kick in during Counter-Attack Battles. However, some of the castaways have skills that will cause a disadvantage…
![]()
Here are a couple of examples:
“Ultimate Blow” (Dogi) – Dogi rushes the battle area and deals damage to all enemies with his prideful fist. This also indces a “Break” state that eliminates the enemies’ weakness attribute, allowing all three attack attributes to deal big damage.
“Arrogant Confusion” (Lord Kahran) – Causes a panic on the battlefield and gives strength to the enemies attacking the base, increasing their attack power significantly for a certain period of time.
—Strengthening the Drifting Village
In addition to creating weapons, armor, and accessories, you can use the materials you obtain on the island to strengthen the Drifting Village’s defense equipment.
