Adol Christin
- Age: 24
- Nickname: Adol the Adventurer
An extraordinary adventurer who is said to have left adventure logs that amount to over 100 volumes to future generations.
Wanted as a material witness in the case of the Romun Fleet’s disappearance in the Atlas Ocean, he was detained by Romun soldiers in Baldeux, The Prison City.
Adol tried to escape from prison, but ended up involved in a strange incident surrounding the Prison City and Monstrum after running into a mysterious girl wielding a gun.
Dogi
- Age: 29
- Nickname: The Wall-Crusher
A muscle-flexing wanderer and Adol’s adventuring partner. The punch unleashed from his large physique can crush even a strong wall of rock.
Having accompanied Adol’s adventures for many years, he can calmly respond to strange occurrences and events beyond human comprehension.
After completing his adventure in Altago, he arrived in the Gllia Eldlingen area, a territory of the Romun Empire, but is discovered by Romun soldiers with Adol.
■ Supernatural Actions
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox uses a unique action system that allows Monstrum to utilize their supernatural powers.
These powers can be activated anywhere, including in the city, on the field, and in dungeons, and are useful not only in battle, but also in dungeon puzzles and city exploration. As you gain the cooperation of the Monstrum that appear in Baldeux, The Prison City, the variety of supernatural powers available to you will increase.
Crimson Line
A supernatural power that allows the user to move over a distance in an instant with the release of a crimson line from their left hand. Since the user’s body itself morphs and moves like a shadow, it can even penetrate obstacles such as rocks and thick iron walls. If you are lined up with an enemy when the ability is activated, you can spring out at them and deal damage.

By using up a certain amount of SP (Skill Points), each character can unleash a unique “Attack Skill.” In addition to SP recovery by landing standard attacks on enemies, SP also automatically recovers quickly on its own when not attacking, so you can unleash flashy skills one after the other without worrying about running out of SP.
Wild Scratch (White Cat-exclusive skill)
A skill attack in which White Cat unleashes a big, two-hit scratch attack after diving at the enemy from a distance. Since the skill can be unleashed quickly and comboed directly from a standard attack, you can add up such combos in battles against numerous powerful enemies to pile on the damage.
Carnage Lancer (Hawk-exclusive skill)
A skill attack in which Hawk lunges into the enemy and fires off a laser-like stab. Although a one-hit attack, its range is considerably long, so by comboing this skill attack in battles against strong enemies, you can fight while remaining at a distance.
Gensou Ranbu (Doll-exclusive skill)
A three-stage attack that starts with series of consecutive stabs that utilize the qualities of Doll’s flexible sweep sword, followed by a wide-ranging spinning slash, and ending with a forward explosion. Since the attack has a large number of hits and covers a wide range, it is useful in both boss battles and in battles against groups of enemies.
Stampede (Raging Bull-exclusive skill)
A skill attack in which Raging Bull charges with all her might to generate a shockwave and strike the enemy in front of her. Although its movement range is short, its power is high, and it can even blow back and inflict smaller enemies with the “down” status ailment when the hit lands.
Dark Inferno (Renegade-exclusive skill)
A skill attack in which Renegade generates a dark sphere in front of him, which pull in nearby enemies while consecutively dealing damage. Since Renegade can also move around while the sphere is in effect, he can take cover in a safety zone while enemies are being pulled into the sphere, or inflict additional damage on the immobile enemies.
Characters
- Commander Chatelard (voiced by Yuuki Ono) – Commander of the Church Knights. A handsome man with tanned skin and silver hair. His position coupled with his appearance has earned him popularity in the city. A battle between him and Hawk will carefully unfold.
- Warden Berger (voiced by Takahiro Shimura) – A military man with excellent judgment ability and is unsparing to the Monstrum. Although impulsive, he is also logical, and while he has no hair left on his head, he does have the deep trust of his subordinates.
- Examiner Ingrid (voiced by Natsuko Hara) (pictured in the above screenshot, via Falcom) – A woman dispatched from the Romun Empire. An excessive realist, she is thickheaded and tries not to believe in rumors and superstitions.
- Marius (voiced by Shuuta Morisaki) – An amnesia-stricken and friendly young man who was imprisoned, and is capable in both action and insight. His memory loss will be the key to the story.
- Margotto (voiced by Kujira) – A resistance leader from the Gllia area. What is her objective in getting through to the prisoners?
Systems
- Boost and Extra Skill – By pressing R1 + L1 during battle, you will enter the “Boost” state, which increases your ability, the damage you deal (as well as lowers enemy damage), movement speed, and the number of combo attacks you can land. Additionally, by pressing R1 + L1 in this state, you can activate your “Extra Skill,” which is a unique special move that ends the Boost state. To enter the Boost state, you must fill up a gauge that builds up by landing standard attacks and taking enemy damage.
- Larva Battles – A dark miasma can be found in various places throughout the game. By touching it, your surroundings will become monotone and a battle will commence. By winning this battle, you will build up your Nox Gauge, which is necessary for “Grimwald’s Night” to occur. There are also hidden, high-difficulty Larva.
- Grimwald’s Night – Occurs when the Nox Gauge reaches its maximum amount. The Monstrum gather in a different dimension where they must defeat countless Larva. The battle will end when all Larva have been defeated. This will also cause barriers in the city to disappear, expanding your range of actions. This system is based on the Raid and Beast Raid systems of the previous game, but brushed up and equipped with elements unique to this game. You will also receive bonuses based on your score and cooperation with Monstrum outside of your party.
- In non-magazine leak-related news, Falcom also shared an image of the map of Balduq, otherwise known as “The Prison City,” where Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is set.
■ Boost
By pressing R1 + L1 during battle, you will enter the “Boost” state, which enhances your character’s abilities for a fixed time.
In addition to granting buff effects such as increasing damage dealt and decreasing damage received in battle, Boost also grants other abilities such as increasing movement speed, attack speed, and combo attack count.
■ Extra Skill
By pressing R1 + L1 during a Boost, you can activate each character’s unique ultimate special attack.
These attacks possess tremendous ability, including ultra powerful and ultra wide-range attacks, but since using them will bring your Boost to an end, it is important to determine the proper timing to use it in battle.
Albion Strike (White Cat)
White Cat’s Extra Skill. She builds up all of her energy into her right fist, then drives straight forward into the enemy while spinning at high speed.
This Extra Skill creates a wide-range shockwave at the time of attack, which can also deal damage to nearby enemies.
Carnival Maiden (Doll)
Doll’s Extra Skill. She holds her sweep sword up to the sky, and generates countless slash attacks in the space in front of her.
Since the space where the slash attacks are generated is spread out both high and low, the attack can land multiple hits on even fast-moving, flying enemies.
