Nintendolife (8/10)

AI: The Somnium Files starts out slow but once you've traversed a few of its delightfully surreal Somnium dreamscapes and got to an ending or two, working your way back through your flowchart and striking out in different directions, it becomes an engaging and tense affair. Fans of the Zero Escape games will feel right at home here, and director Kotaro Uchikoshi’s talent for putting the player into increasingly unsettling circumstances ensures everything takes flight in a very satisfying way as you work your way through the many strands of the loopy central mystery towards its various different endings.

Twinfinite (3/5)

Pros

  • The Somnium puzzle sequences are really interesting and quite fun to explore.
  • Some great character moments that help to give the game life.
  • Well-thought-out conclusion that serves as a nice narrative payoff to the rest of the story.
Cons

  • The opening hours are really rough and kinda slow.
  • The overall pacing of the story just feels off.
  • The writing isn’t great.
  • Dragged out investigation sequences feel like padding to lengthen playtime

wccftech (8/10)AI: The Somnium Files (PS4) Review – Don’t Sleep on This Thriller

While the story and characters of AI: The Somnium Files are both great, the presentation itself lacks the same polish when it comes to the 3D models. There are some interesting action sequences that are instead acted out offscreen while the camera pans elsewhere and many of the sight gags lack any real visual cues. Thankfully, the writing more than makes up for this, so often times it’s best to consider The Somnium Files to be more like a visual novel with some extra animations thrown in.

We Got this Covered (4/5)

I wouldn’t blame anyone for being disappointed with AI: The Somnium Files. Everything is so cinematic that player input feels close to pointless — from mysteries being solved through flashbacks to easily solved puzzles. Yet in the end, it’s easy to forget about silly annoyances. The visuals, voice acting, and writing completely distracted me. I’m a sucker for a decent story, and this one deserves attention.

Video Chums (9.2/10)Best. Detective game. Ever.

  • + Thoroughly enjoyable cast with interesting stories and charming personalities
  • + Branching storylines keep things engaging
  • + Great use of lighthearted humour
  • - Occasional moments make it tough to figure out what to do in order to progress

Gaming Respawn - 9/10

"AI: The Somnium Files is one of the best adventure games in recent memory, with a wonderful cast, a thrilling story packed full of brilliantly conceived twists and some truly brilliant voice acting performances. This is a title no fan of murder mysteries, adventure games or visual novels should even dare miss."

GamePitt - 10/10

"The Good:

- Brilliant story with many branching timelines based on your experience and choices within the Somnium.

- Great voice acting in both English and Japanese.

- Mesmerising and haunting soundtrack which perfectly fits the mood - I love A-Sets song as well!

- Lots of 'random' conversations and observations to make, each one as funny as the last.

- The Somnium puzzles are all unique and offer multiple ways of solving them - as well as hidden objects to find.

The Bad:

- The game had to end.

- Sometimes you forget who's alive and who is dead as you jump between pathways (not a negative, it just gets a little confusing at times)."

It's Zero Time dilemma all over again???
