Django attacks are similar to certain characters in Tobal 2 (Dog, Ikkaku, Tri Horn, Spike Shield, ...), and his second color makes him similar to the Final Fantasy VII character Red XIII. Also, many of his attacks are named after Final Fantasy VII characters.

In Banner Village, the side quest to recruit Tir McDohl is affected if the game imports save data from Suikoden. If the player imports a save file with the 108 Stars of Destiny recruited in the first game, Gremio will appear in the game starting with this side quest. However, in a developer interview published in the March 1999 issue of DenGeki PlayStation magazine, director Yoshitaka Murayama revealed that should you import a save file without recruiting all 108 Stars of Destiny, Ellie will replace Gremio in the Banner Village events of the side quest.

According to the Capcom team in the game's official Japanese guide book, the game's designer for Regina said the costume was inspired by Jessica Priest played by Melinda Clarke from the 1997 film Spawn. In the MSX version of Dragon Quest II, talking to the King of Ladatorm without having anything equipped to the princess will get the player the "Scandalous Swimsuit." The screen will then cut to a crude sprite drawing of the princess in the swimsuit briefly before returning to the game. This is not present in any other version of the game, though it was originally planned to appear in the Famicom version.
