In an early version of the game, Sly's cane was originally going to transform into different gadgets. These would've included a spray that revealed invisible lasers and a freeze ray that would be used to trap small enemies in blocks of ice and be used as platforms.

For Dead or Alive 3, Team Ninja considered replacing the entire roster of the past two games with a new set of characters, with Hitomi as the new heroine to replace Kasumi. This idea was scrapped, with the exception of Hitomi's inclusion as a fighter.

Naming

The series takes several naming cues from the English glam rock band Queen, who are highly popular in Japan. The name of the series itself, Ogre Battle, comes from a song off of Queen's 1974 sophomore album Queen II; another song on the album, "The March of the Black Queen", is the namesake for the series' first installment. The second game, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, takes its name from Queen's 1976 song "Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)", an homage to their Japanese fanbase.

The game contains multiple references to previous games in the series. Most notably when Claire tells Moira a gun is "more reliable than any person" (quoting Steve from Code: Veronica), Barry saying he is the master of unlocking (referencing a scene from the original game) and Claire saying she was almost "a Claire sandwich" (referencing Barry from the first game). Also worth noting is that just like in her previous appearance, Claire wakes up abducted on a prison island overrun by zombies and other creatures.

Super o Revenge?:

The Revenge of Shinobi

The Japanese version of the game was renamed "The Super Shinobi". Putting a US copy of the game into a Japanese console will still show the title as The Super Shinobi. Likewise, playing a Japanese copy of the game on a American or European machine will still show the title as Revenge of Shinobi.

In the Japanese version a room near the end of Wily stage 1 has a different layout. The international layout removes the platform in the middle of the screen and moves the weapon capsules to a lower platform on the far right, probably to make them easier to get to. This also forces the player to switch weapons mid-air if they don't want to refill Rush Coil or Rush Jet.

There was once a character planned for the game called Capu Capu who was ultimately cut. He was originally the captain of the boat that took Crash to Iceberg Laboratory. He was cut as they had left it until the last minute to add him to the game, by which point finalizing the game had already begun.

Metal Slug 7 was the first main title in the series to not get released in arcades and didn't get a console port until its upgraded version, Metal Slug XX, was released digitally on Xbox Live Arcade.
