Taking its name from Freud's primal, instinct-driven face of the human psyche, id Software is, by general acknowledgement, the coolest game shop in the world.

Responsible for some of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed video games of all time, id's ferociously independent staff of artists, programmers and designers have been rocking the gaming world from Mesquite, Texas since 1991. Ushering in a new era of interactive entertainment with genre-defining blockbusters like Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM and QUAKE, id has secured itself a place in gaming history as one of the fathers of the modern video game.

id's games go beyond state-of-the-art, delivering stunning graphics, liquid-smooth Internet action and countless forward-thinking technical, artistic, and gameplay refinements. From legitimizing the shareware distribution model and establishing the PC as a formidable gaming platform, to giving birth to the mod community and introducing to fans Internet-based multiplayer gaming, id has, and continues to lead the interactive entertainment world by example.

It all began on May 5, 1991, when id Software, fresh off the heels of its success with the Commander Keen series of titles, gave the PC gaming world a glimpse of the future with the shareware release of Wolfenstein 3D. A shot of pure adrenaline, Wolfenstein 3D thrust gamers into a frenetic first-person universe of relentless action that would forever change the face of gaming.

Widely recognized as the original first-person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D was later inducted into the Computer Gaming World "Hall of Fame" for shaping the overall direction of the video game industry.

Then, on December 10, 1993, id unleashed DOOM on the world. A technically stunning opus of heart-stopping action, unspeakable horror and pure gaming bliss, DOOM heralded a paradigm shift in video games. Hardcore PC games were going mainstream.

Selling millions of copies and chalking up tens of millions of downloads as shareware, DOOM remains one of the most popular PC games ever. And the title's impact on the gaming world is still felt today.

With DOOM, id Software put the shareware distribution model on the map, with the game's runaway success owing a debt to the growth of Internet distribution. The company has continued to support shareware and other non-traditional means of distribution, influencing the way companies market and sell video games.

DOOM also introduced multiplayer gaming to the masses, allowing players to compete in intense 4-player LAN or head-to-head modem competitions.

id Software didn't stop there, the team of innovators also made DOOM's source code available to their fan base, encouraging would-be game designers to modify the game and create their own levels, or "mods." Fans were free to distribute their mods of the game, as long as the updates were offered free of charge to other enthusiasts. The mod community took off, giving the game seemingly eternal life on the Internet. In fact, id discovered many of their current employees and development partners based on mods that were created and distributed over the Internet.

DOOM and its sequels went on to enjoy tremendous sales on virtually every gaming platform available - from the Sega Genesis to the Game Boy Advance.

The next quantum leap in PC gaming came from id Software in 1996 with the release of QUAKE. Based on an all-new graphics engine, QUAKE was the first truly 3D video game, allowing players to interact with the virtual worlds created by id like never before. Gamers were free to look and move in any direction, giving the game designers at id the freedom and ability to create incredibly immersive environments in this epic, single-player game.

id Software continued the tradition of QUAKE, with QUAKE II in 1997. Supporting multiplay for up to 32 players simultaneously, QUAKE II was a watershed hit for the company, selling more than one million copies, despite it's steep hardware requirements. By now, it had become clear that id's games were reason enough to upgrade, or even buy, personal home computers.

In 1999, the easy-going guys from Mesquite further cemented their place in gaming lore with the ultimate deathmatch experience, QUAKE III Arena and the QUAKE III: Team Arena add-on pack. Designed to be the ultimate multiplayer experience, QUAKE III Arena has become the defacto standard for professional gamers and is the game of choice for tournaments around the world. A QUAKE III Arena tournament is the centerpiece of id's annual QuakeCon tournament and LAN party, played every summer near the company's headquarters in Mesquite. QuakeCon 2001 winners alone pulled in a combined $50,000 in cash and prizes.

In 2001, id Software teamed up with Gray Matter Interactive and Nerve Software to develop Return to Castle Wolfenstein, a re-imagining of the original classic, Wolfenstein 3D. Built around the Quake III Arena graphics engine, Return to Castle Wolfenstein introduced a new generation of gamers to the epic series that started it all. In its first two months of release, Return to Castle Wolfenstein shipped over one million units worldwide, and has been widely acclaimed as the best computer game of 2001.

The company also has enjoyed success licensing its revolutionary technology to other developers. To date, id's game engines have powered blockbuster titles from other producers, including Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, Soldier of Fortune, Half-Life, Half-Life: Counter-Strike, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Star Trek: Elite Force, Anachronox, and more.

id Software is currently hard at work creating the next chapter in the DOOM legacy, building a new terrifying adventure based on the storyline of the original masterwork. Featuring a new, mind-blowing gaming engine, the closely guarded DOOM III draws players into the most frightening and gripping 3D gaming experience ever created, and in true id fashion, will be released "when it's done."

What id is

Id Software is, by general acknowledgement, the coolest game shop in the world. Named for the instinctual part of the human psyche first identified by Freud, id’s software development team continues to make gaming history. As a renown leader in the industry and one of the world’s leading developer of best selling software, id Software has forged frenetic titles such as Wolfenstein 3-D, DOOM, DOOM II, QUAKE, and QUAKE II. With intense graphics and mind-blowing adventure, id creates frenzied demands worldwide and continues to break retail and shareware sales records. id’s advanced QUAKE II engine is leading the next revolution in 3-D interactive games with both single and multiplayer technology. And, in keeping with tradition, id Software amplifies the world of adrenaline pumping 3-D gaming with the development of their latest action title, QUAKE III Arena.

Just off the freeway exit to downtown Mesquite, TX, you’ll find id Software. In their black glass building, with Ferraris and Porches parked out front and computer toys spilling into the hallways, the wizards that are id have crated one sensational action game after another and have single-handedly raised the standard of excellence in gaming technology. In fact, the Computer Gaming World Hall of Fame recognized Wolfenstein 3-D as helping to shape the overall direction of the computer gaming industry. id's products have managed to consistently break shareware and retail sales records at home and abroad while become the torch bearer of what’s hot in the game industry – immersive, frenetic and instantly-gratifying games that push user involvement to a whole new level. id writes games that are cool, games they want to play. And, because of id’s phenomenal success, its games have been ported to virtually every gaming and computer platform.id has proven itself to be genius at more than just software development. Using a non-traditional means of product distribution – shareware channels, online services, and the Internet – id has helped to create a new way to market computer games. id's tittles have become cultural phenomenon inspiring other developers while spawning mainstream licensing agreements for movie and book series – id games have been featured on prime time TV shows such as "Friends" and "ER" and in the movies "The Net," "Congo" and "Gross Point Blank."

1998 has taken id well beyond Wolfeinstein 3D and DOOM to new games, gaming platforms and markets. Because nothing is more compelling than interacting with another player, id believes that focusing on the multiplayer capabilities of its games and pushing communication technologies to their limits with their latest masterpiece QUAKE III Arena will be the next true revolution in three-dimensional interactive gaming.

id unofficially started in September of 1990 when John Carmack, Adrian Carmack, John Romero, and Tom Hall created the first game in the Commander Keen series, Invasion of the Vorticons. One month after Commander Keen was released into shareware, John Carmack, Adrian Carmack, and John Romero left their jobs at Softdisk Publishing and officially began id Software, on February 1, 1991.

On May 5, 1992, id’s first shareware monster-hit, Wolfenstein 3-D, was released by Apogee. Wolfenstein 3-D brought id worldwide notoriety and the game’s 3-D environment dramatically raised the standards expected for games.

On December 10, 1993, id released its much-anticipated DOOM. DOOM attained phenomenal success and is still recognized as the hottest 3-D action game of all time. DOOM changed the face of computer gaming forever. Recognized as the catalyst and inspiration of what we know now as 3-D action gaming, an estimated 15 million copies have been downloaded around the world, passed from player to player by floppy disk or online networks.

In 1994, DOOM was awarded Game of the Year by both PC Gamer and Computer Gaming World and received the Award for Technical Excellence from PC Magazine.

On October 10, 1994, DOOM II: Hell on Earth was released in the U.S. and in Great Britain. DOOM II’s initial release was over half-million copies – it continues to set new sales records, having sold over 2 million copies with no end in sight.

In 1996, id unleashed QUAKE, the most highly anticipated game since DOOM. QUAKE marked the next quantum leap in game technology and set a new standard in multi-player, true three-dimensional, combat action games. In 1997, the furor over QUAKE continued with the release of two QUAKE Mission Packs, QUAKE Mission Pack No. 1: Scourge of Armagon and QUAKE Mission Pack No. 2: Dissolution of Eternity.

December 9, 1997, id Software and Activision rocked the continent with the release of the mind-blowing, QUAKE II. Continuing id’s legacy of bloody deathmatches, QUAKE II offered wicked multi-player capabilities allowing more than 32 gamers to compete online. Players maneuver through intense environmental hazards and annihilate evil enemies. The game’s improved vivid sound effects intensify distant combat and destruction, while the use of OpenGL 3-D accelerator cards deliver smoother, 16-bit graphics and real time lighting effects. QUAKE II exceeded expectations worldwide and has been hailed by countless reviewers and gamers alike, as the best 3-D shooter game of the year.

Se vuoi citare tutti i giochi usciti basati su tech iD mancano centinaia di titoli: Half-Life, Call of Duty, SOF1, ecc.

cosa intendi come "maniera seria?"
