There's much more to say about Demon's Souls for PS5, but that can wait for the full review. I am eager to get back to playing it, and that should say a lot. Early signs are good for the game. At this point, we've come to expect Bluepoint to put out top-notch remakes, but this is a game that feels like the studio is flexing its own creative muscles too, and as I venture deeper into Boletaria I'm excited to see what else it has in store.
One day wasn't enough to burn through Demon's Souls, but so far, this remake feels like a gift – a game that had no right to turn out this well so early into a new console's lifecycle. It's a tough act to follow.
For a remake of a deeply-played game like Demon's Souls, that's no small feat. It's impressive how much Bluepoint is able to evoke a sense of intrigue and excitement for long-time fans while still staying overwhelmingly true to From Software's flawed but way-ahead-of-its-time source material.
Whether it's the so-short-you-hardly-notice-them load screens, the grand orchestrated score when a boss enters the room, the stunning visual details in the distance (Stonefang and the giant towering heart in Latria), the revamped characters (oh my god, Patches!), or the freaky new sound design (you aren't ready for the Man Centipedes, or heck, even just an accidental exploding pot you strolled into in the dark), there's so much to take in, even for familiar players. First-timers are in for such a treat.
WOWI've already had several lightning-in-a-bottle moments with Demon's Souls, but the moment this remake truly clicked – the time I felt like I was playing something familiar and fresh – was the Tower Knight tussle early into the game. Much has been said about the DualSense controller's haptic feedback that "fights back" and puts the old standard rumble to shame, and this boss fight sold me even more than Astro's Playroom. When that massive shield comes crashing down into the floor, you're going to feel it deep down. This fight – a fight I've played countless times before – has never felt more intense.

Demon’s Souls on PS5 is a classic reborn
The PlayStation 5 remake of FromSoftware’s RPG is an improvement in almost every way
PlayStation 5 owners are getting something unprecedented: one of the best video games of all time transformed into one of the best-looking games ever.
The spectacle of seeing this massive creature, while dramatic in the original game, is now astounding. The Demon’s Souls remake’s visual fidelity, its immersive sound effects and score, and the haptic feedback from the DualSense controller together convey the scale of a giant beast tearing through the atmosphere above me. And when I bring down my sword on this demon, I feel the thundercrack reverberate through my hands and my ears as the screen shakes violently. It is an experience far superior to the original.

Demon's Souls was eagerly awaited for this PlayStation 5 launch and we are not disappointed, as the game has clearly already established itself as a major title in the PlayStation catalog. This next-gen version takes up all the basics of its first release and revisits the graphics and the optimization without adding new content. It is a stunning remake. We quickly forgot the somewhat rigid mechanics of the genre and let ourselves be carried away by the adventure. The Bluepoint teams have simply brought back to life a masterpiece that didn't have the success it deserved a decade ago.
