Dragon’s Crown is VanillaWare’s most expensive project
Dragon’s Crown might still be two weeks away from North American shores, but it’s available at retailers starting today in Japan. And to commemorate the game’s release, VanillaWare founder and lead artist George Kamitani has taken to Twitter with some new artwork and information.
“Dragon’s Crown is actually the first title our company has developed that has gone over the 100 million yen (around one million dollars) wall in costs,” he said. “I’m very thankful to have met the release date without problems.”

Hai messo insieme tutte le domande (e risposte) fatte all'utente KIRBYSIM,ottima mossa! //content.invisioncic.com/a283374/emoticons/sisi.gifDitemi grazie :kep88:The JP version of the game has English text or only the English voices? In case that all the text is in Japanese, is it hard to figure out what to do in the game?
The Japanese version only has Japanese text. However in the game settings you can switch the narrator/dungeon master's voice to English, which changes everybody else's voices in English (except for those of your characters, which you can set individually to be Japanese or English) - so you don't really lose any story comprehension.
At certain points in the game you need to make A or B choices, and those choices are never read out to you, just presented in text. Still, it's very simple to figure out which option it is you want; usually it's just to pick whether you'd like to take on the A boss or the B boss for each stage, but there are a few story A/B choices that attempt to give you the impression that this is YOUR story but do not really affect anything.
I'll be putting up videos of each class's skill lists with English translations for what the skills are.
Not sure if it's feasible, but I will try to put up a video with English translations for side-quests as well... problem is, I don't understand WTF it is you're supposed to do even though I can read the stuff. Besides, I don't have all of the side-quests unlocked yet.
How would you rate the replay value of the game?
I think you guys already know this, but there's Normal Mode (Lv cap: 35), Hard (65), and Inferno (99).
Level caps are one thing, but what makes you strong in this game are the crazy equipment you find - stacking chances for critical hit, damage reduction, etc etc.
After clearing Normal mode you also unlock the Arena and the... Chaos Dungeon? Not too sure how to translate that, but these levels are randomly-generated.
I have videos of both the Chaos Dungeon and the Battle Arena so I'll probably put those up later today.
Worth the $$? Who'd you use in your first playthrough? rating /10? replay value? fun?
It's definitely worth the money if you like the genre. I played as the Sorceress.
Thinking 8.5 or 9.0 out of 10.0.
The replay value will come out of online when you jump into random games with random people and take on stuff. It's pretty challenging.
someone on my twitter was asking about possibility of using a mic chat inside the game.
Played a few online games, but nobody bothered to use a mic. These are Japanese players we're talking about, though. They're known to be silent killers.
So I don't know how the mic thing works... You can start a party chat, I suppose?
1080p? (Please say it is...well, unless it isn't, of course...)
I play on a 1080p-native monitor, but... I'm not too sure if it's upscaled from 720p. Is there a way I can check?
I would like to know if its possible to run while in combat? all the videos I seen people were running to a new objective but never during combat.
After combat has started, yes you can still run.
Every character has a wall-bounce move that's triggered by them starting a run and stopping when next to an enemy. It's a universal attack.
1. What do all the stats do in detail?
I hear IGN's the expert on stats. So, go ask IGN.
Just kidding. The stats were never explained in the game... I guess I should look at the instruction manual... oh, there it is, on page 19.
STR --- Affects strength of physical attacks.
INT --- Affects strength of magic attacks.
CON --- How much damage reduction you get off of physical attacks that hit you.
MGR --- How much damage reduction you get off of magic attacks that hit you.
DEX --- This affects how stable your weapon damage is (note: every weapon's attack stat is listed as XX to XX. For intance, an S class level 36 weapon might be 81 to 103, while an E class lv.36 one might be 3 to 103... this stat affects how consistent your damage ratings are, I suppose).
LUC --- Affects rates of critical hits.
2. How do you get skill points besides as quest rewards?
Levelling up and clearing sub-quests seem to be the only ways to get skill points. Main quests do not reward you with skill points.
ANOTHER QUESTION: How much damage does a critical hit do? Like is it 2x, 3x, or a +%
Hmmm... this is one of those things that the game doesn't make it clear, but judging from what I've seen (a regular hit hitting a boss for 300+ damage, critical for 500+), I'd say it's probably 1.5x. Maybe 2x. Not too sure.
AND ANOTHER: How many skill points would you say you got from sub-quests and do you only get 1 skill point per level up? If so, then how many skills would you say you were able to max out in your Normal playthrough?
You can 1 skill point per level. Sub-quests give you 1 or 2 depending on the quest.
By the way, skill upgrades do not always cost 1 skill point. For instance, the Evade (lets you dodge twice/thrice/four times consecutively) costs 2 skill points to activate at level 1.
I've paid as much as 5 skill points for an upgrade.
As for how many skills I was able to max out in my Normal playthrough... pretty much zero.
Well, the thing is, before you can upgrade a certain skill any further, you need to reach a certain level first.
And since the maximum level for a Normal playthrough is LV.35 (I finished at Lv.32)... there aren't a whole lot of skills you can max out just through Normal mode alone.
Can you find the NPC ally bones purely with single player? Can they get stronger(eg level up, better equips)?
You can find ally bones in multiplayer too. The reason for that is mostly because one of the Sorceress's skills lets her summon skeleton familiars, raised from piles of bones you find lying around.
But yeah, you can collect them in multiplayer as wel, to bring back into your single-player game for use as NPCs later.
It'd probably be more accurate to say that the game doesn't actually distinguish between single-player and multiplayer, so if a certain stage you know always has bones in a particular area, the bones will pretty much always be there regarldess if you're playing online or offline.
NPC characters never level up or get stronger; their levels are somewhere around whatever level you were when you collected those bones - so if you're at Lv20, bones you find will give you NPCs around Lv17~23-ish (roughly).
In a way it's kinda pointless for the NPCs to level up or get stronger, because they die and disappear so quickly - if they die and you do not spend money to "Continue" for them, they're gone for good. Continues start at 1,600 gold (therearound), but get more expensive the more times you continue with the same NPC/player character... so it makes more cents to just let them die. (sic)
Can you ever bring any of your other created characters along to a dungeon with you?
Nope. You can't. Not as NPCs.
You can, however, use them as player characters, of course.
What can you tell us about equipment? Are they diablo like? do they have magical attributes or are they just stronger (raise your def or attack)
and can you buy them in shop or its loot only?
I'm not an expert on Diablo, but it certainly seems to me that the weapons and equipment are all Diablo-like.
By that I mean, on top of the base stats for the weapon (which is decided by the weapon/equipment's level requirement), there are enchantments that give you additional benefits, depending on the rarity of the loot.
Going back to my weapon example, an S and E-class weapon of the same level might look like this:
S-rarity Lv36 Ice staff
ATK: 81 to 103
-11% damage received from enemies
+9% Ice damage
-12% spell attack power and mana consumption
+12% damage to Undead
E-rarity LV36 Ice Staff
ATK: 3 to 103
Equipment-wise, some of the common enchantments include, reduce stun, reduce damage received, increase damage dealt out, when LP (life point) = 0, reduce damage received/HP recovery/whatever, increased maximum HP, increased maximum MP... there's really a lot of different types.
You can't ever buy weapons/equipment. It's loot only.
Another question, in all the gameplay videos I have saw the average run of a quest is between 7 to 15 minutes, is this avarege time apply for all the game or at end game quest take longer time?
7 to 15 minutes is definitely the average time for a quest, but some of the B path bosses are so difficult that you won't be able to figure out how to slay them on your first run through.
There's a time limit for B path bosses too, so even after you figure out how you're supposed to fight, you might still have to do it a few times to get it done within the time/map limit.
Sometimes it could be that you're simply not strong enough yet; so go do some side-quests first, get better loot. If you do multiple stages back-to-back, there's a chance that loot rarity will be improved (they show you the actual percentage increase at the end of each stage, before you decide to tread on).
how's the netcode quality online? Is it as good as Chronicles of Mystara, Hard Corps Uprising or SSF2 HD Remix?
Only played 2 online sessions cos, well, you know, not many people have the game yet.
The netcode is good; I didn't experience any lag. But then again I am the host both times.
When a player disconnects, you are left with the NPC version of that character.
1. Do weapons have any specific status ailments/effects? Anything at all that makes different weapons special other than stats?
I have not seen any weapons that dish out status effects... will have to check on this the next time I play.
The Elf has a skill that lets her enchant arrows and daggers with poison.
Some melee weapons have elemental damage enchantments... but I'm not too sure if they can cause freezing or fire, etc. Not too sure on this since so far I've mostly played Sorceress.
2. Due to the choices in the game, how does it work for groups of players? I imagine there must be some sort of voting system or it's all up to the host.
Everyone can pick A or B, but I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a voting system, or if the game will just disconnect players who pick the A path from players who picked the B path.
3. Could you possibly give some details about how the cooking minigame works and whether or not it's practical to use?
Well, the cooking minigame is a bonus event that occurs randomly, if you decide to head to the next dungeon without taking a break.
So basically you just put an entree down on one of the pots and pans, and try to season it (salt, chillis, spices, wine, etc), and get it served on your plates before it's burned.
You get HP, ATK, DEF, and score bonuses for the next round, and I'm guessing the bonuses are not permanent... again, this is one of those things that the game doesn't really explain in-depth.
Without out spoiling anything im curious about the skill system, are there a lot of different skills/intresting skills and do you think theres enough customization involved? Also are there different colors palette to choose from?
Colour palettes, yes, abour 5 for each class.
Skill system-wise... there's nothing to spoil. Right from the outset of the game all the skills that you can possibly learn are laid out in front of you.
It's just a matter of figuring out which ones are actually useful to you, at the present point in the game for you.
Hmm...good question. Some games tell the resolution on the back of the case (sometimes in kinda fine print)...I don't know if you have a case for that or not.
Yeah, it says 1080p on the back. Pretty much everything from 576p to 1080p.
But still, it could be upscaled. So I dunno. Anyway, best not to worry about it. Game looks good. In Vanillaware we trust.
Please tell me whether or not the game was difficult. Did it give you a challenge? Did you end up dying a lot or really having to be on your toes at all times? I'm talking about normal and any other difficult you've played.
It's hard to answer this but... the game is definitely challenging without being frustrating.
I died quite a lot.
1. Does the Player character speak outside of combat grunts? In any cutscene or dialogue? Can you set the player character as narrator in both eng and jp? How much spoken dialogue is there in the game?
No cutscenes or dialogues where they speak. So just grunts.
No, the narrator/dungeon master cannot be changed to a PC's voice. You only have two options, English, or the name of the Japanese narrator, Takashi Taniguchi, who passed away late last year.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.co.uk/news/2012-12-28/voice-actor-takashi-taniguchi-passes-away
2. How are bone NPC allies treated? Do they acquire further levels/skills/gear on their own? Are their current level/skill/gear randomised when found?
They do not acquire further levels/skills/gears.
Their current level is randomised based on your level when you find the bones. You might get NPCs who are slightly higher level than yours if you're lucky, but most of the time they are slightly under your level.
3. Are there any notable irritations? Load times, etc.
Well, the game's not out yet, and what I'm doing here is not meant to be a review. I want to be careful about what I say because people are going to jump to conclusions without even as much as trying the game.
If I didn't have other things to do I'd play Dragon's Crown non-stop, I'd say that much. So if there are any notable irritations... it doesn't really matter.
Are there multiple instances of a class in one file? Example: When playing local co-op, if there's a party of say Elf, Sorc, and Wizard, if I choose to play solo on the same file with a character my friend was using (ie. Sorc), will it load his or can I create my own? And when resuming co-op, will he get to resume his Sorc or will he have to use mine?
Yes, you can create multiple instances of each class, and each instance with have his or her own randomly-generated name (or you could change their names).
You can play a multiplayer session of 4 Elves if you like. 4x the Asami Imai/Mingos.
As for your question about resuming co-op... I'll check and let you know after I've done an actual local multiplayer game - which I'm doing on Friday night.
I really want to know how extensive combos are in this game. Is their anything like canceling, buffering, and chaining skills?
Every character has wall-bounce moves and some way to launch.
Yes, you can cancel certain attacks into certain attacks.
Buffering... I can't think of any reason why you'd want to buffer anything in this game.
Can spells critical hit?
Yes.
How is running handled? is it a directional double-tap or is there a run button or something else?
You can do double-tap, but the recommended method is to start walking then hold square.
how does the multiplayer work and how do you pick diffrent characters or is it a pre-set path of who you play as?
It's jump-in, jump-out style.
If you turn on online, people will be able to jump into your game, and help you with your quest.
If you jump into someone else's game (either random or friend match), you will help out in the host's quest.
Are there any command-input moves/attacks? Like the fireball/hadouken motion?
Not that I know of. Trust me, game is chaotic enough without fireball-motion moves.
What is the penalty after using up all your lives?
You'll have to pay gold to continue. It's something like 1,600 gold for the first continue. Then around 4,000~5,000-ish for the second. And then over 10,000, etc.
Given that you earn between 5,000 to 10,000 gold per quest, continuing more than once = you're losing gold to clear it.
You don't necessarily lose anything if you die and just let it go over to Game Over. You still keep all the loot you found, so it's usually a better idea to stop if you're losing too much gold - don't forget, you have to pay gold to have your NPC teammates continue as well.
Does the dodge have invincibility frames? As in, can you dodge through attacks if you time your dodges properly?
Yes, but the invincibility period is very short. Many times I find myself still getting hit despite dodging. Usually what you want to do is to jump out of the way first, then dodge, to get more mileage out of it.
Later on you can unlock the skill Evade which lets you dodge 2 or 3 or 4 times consecutively.
Can you trade equipment to other players online?
Last question, but it's a huge one and I can understand if you don't want to answer it or don't have time. You said that all skills are available to be bought from the beginning for every character. Would you mind listing the Elf's skills and what they do? Will you be providing translations?
Yep, going to put the videos up and add English captions for the skill descriptions.
i'm pretty sure vanillaware mentioned they're releasing a dlc (free only for the 1st month after release) that enables you to choose the voice actors/actresses to narrate the story
You're right. When I uploaded/downloaded my save file from PS3 to Vita, the game said that I'd still need to download the narrator voices that I purchased from the PSN store separately.
So yeah, there will be narrator voices. I'm not sure if they're free, but you can bet I'm going to get Asami Imai's, maybe make a quick video or something.
TC , you said the elf can poison her daggers . Never saw her use them , are they on her feet ?
They are items that you pick up on the ground. You can throw them by pressing forward+triangle, or attacking with them using the square button.
I think I got everything I could from this. Just not confident about the cooking thing.
I saw someone dump some meat in the pan then click on spin until it turned rather dark. What is the goal? Do we want it at a certain level? Is eating it well done, medium or full burnt any different? What about soups? You can't burn soup....
Would you have any idea on this OP? You've probably done a few rounds of cooking already.
According to what I gather from what the Player Characters or NPCs comment when they eat, there are supposedly RECIPES that you can use to make dishes that buff you in a certain way.
Not sure about if burning your food will make things worse somehow, but you still get stat bonuses if the food is burnt.
The cooking minigame is not explained very well, and something that I'd have to look up a Japanese wiki for, once someone puts up confirmed info, but typically you can take an entree and add salt, wine, chilli, spices, or onions to improve it.
You can also stir-fry the dish/stir the pot by highlighting the pot/pan and selecting the left option. Right option is to serve it.
Can you give a quick rundown on the classes you have played and how good the netcode is.
I'll do a rundown of the classes once the skill card videos are up.
There's actually a description of the basic moves for each class in the instruction manual. When you put two to two together (basic moves + skill cards), that gives you a pretty good idea of what each class is about.
Netcode is solid. I've played around 8 different sessions now. Never had a problem. Auto-matching has been giving me really good results.
Is the story good?
Story's pretty decent for the genre. I didn't see anything telegraphed from a mile away - there are some surprises, and a little political intrigue (which I didn't expect).
To be honest, there isn't much of a story to speak of. It's just... a chain of events that lead to fighting against some really cool bosses.
Seriously, The Lost Woods's B boss. Just amazing.
One other question though, about how many enemies have you encountered on screen at once? Not looking for an exact number or anything, just wondering if it was a few or an amount that easily outnumbers a party of 4 players. I can't imagine this being the type of game that has more than 5-6 mob type enemies at once, but if it's more than that's great.
In certain boss fights, more than two dozen at times.
But usually what the game does is throw about 4~12 regular enemies at you at once.
Is there any way you can upload a 1080p video? Even a few seconds would be enough, just so we can have a taste of the true high definition.
Okay. Actually I recorded all the videos in 720p 60fps but I forgot YouTube converts them back to 30fps anyway.
The vids I have that are already on their way to YouTube will be 720p only, but future batches will be 1080p.
Oh yeah, guys, let me shamelessly plug this site that I'm writing for: http://sgcafe.com
Later today/tomorrow (depending on your timezone) I'm putting up a quick rundown of the different classes' basic attacks, along with embedded videos of their skill cards.
I'll dive more into what you can expect in terms of game progression, etc.
Some of it will be information that you guys already know, so I thought I'd answer your questions here first.
But it would help me a great deal if you guys would check out the content once it's published, and leave your thoughts/questions in the comments, which I will definitely read and answer as well. Thanks in advance. //content.invisioncic.com/a283374/emoticons/laugh.png
I'd love play each as each character eventually. Do they all have separate files? Or can I play one dungeon as an Amazon and switch to the Dwarf for the second dungeon or to replay the first?
You have to replay from the beginning. But that's mostly because you're starting from Lv1 and won't be strong enough to take on the dungeon that the Amazon's at anyway.
With Skill Points, will we all have different builds or is there enough skill points by 99 and all the quests to max out every skill?
Don't know.
But you'll have to pick which skills you want and which skills you don't early on, that's for sure.
Can you reset skill points or are you choices permenant?
There's an item to reset skill points. You first obtain it by clearing Labyrinth of Chaos Floor 3. Gonna try to see if I can get more of it by clearing it repeatedly.
1). How many bosses are there? [rough estimate]
2). Are there monsters, bosses and content that we haven't seen yet in the trailers?
9x2 bosses + 1 final boss. Also, in Labyrinth of Chaos mode, sometimes the boss appears in slightly remixed forms... let's just say that in the regular B path stages, there is a bail-out time limit... but there is none in LoC mode, you either beat the boss, or die trying.
There are plenty of monsters you haven't seen. Occasionally the game will throw at you a really tough mob.
Also on Hard mode there are some surprises... I don't want to ruin it for you, but there are new monsters in Hard.
Q: If I pick a character and go online can I select options so that only one online person can join my game? I'm interested in a playthrough with just 2 online people.
At the Dragon's Heaven Tavern you can switch off P3 and P4 slots so that nobody joins you.
With the P2 slot on, there's a good chance that an NPC might take the slot mid-quest (NPCs can randomly jump in to help), but once someone gets connected to your game, their Player Character will take the place of the NPC. Happened to me before.
So, if I beat the game on normal mode at level 30 will Inferno be "unlocked"? What are the specific conditions for unlocking Inferno?
You have to clear Hard mode.
