It’s said that work on the game began in 2020 with a focus on creating a fully open world. However, for reasons unknown, the team decided to scrap those plans after two years of development. The project was rebooted later that year and now aims to deliver large open explorable areas while sticking to a more traditional linear structure.

Metro 4 promises to expand familiar environments such as the Moscow Metro and its surrounding areas. Iconic factions like Hanza are also set to make their return. It also mentioned that Metro 4‘s art direction remains in the capable hands of Sergei Karmalsky, ensuring the foreboding atmosphere the series is known for. But the most significant departure from previous games is the choice of protagonist.

Dear Friends,

We understand there is some confusion out there about 4A Games and Metro, and we just wanted to give you a quick update to reassure everyone.

We are 4A Games.

We are the team that created and built the Metro games you know and love. We’re still making the next Metro with Dmitry Glukhovsky, the same core founders, leadership, developers, and nearly 20 years experience on the series. We also have our other new IP project in the works. We’ll reveal more about both when we’re ready.

We are proudly Ukrainian in our roots, and in the majority of our diverse team. We make games from our offices in Kyiv and Sliema, as well as remotely, and even sometimes from the front line in Ukraine. We now have studios in two countries, but the majority of our team remain in Ukraine - roughly 150 out of about 200+. The rest work in Malta, or remotely.

In 2014, we, led by the original "four A's" - the founders of 4A Games - formed “4A Games Limited” and created a new HQ in Malta with roughly 50 of our fellow team members. We have since grown and work to this day on Metro under contract with Deep Silver and Plaion.

We continued to work closely with our remaining Ukrainian colleagues at “4A Games Ukraine” on Metro Exodus through an outsource relationship led by us. Once Metro Exodus and its DLC was released, we created another Kyiv studio under 4A Games Limited and welcomed roughly 50 more of our colleagues to continue on with us, while 4A Games Ukraine continued to pursue their own project La Quimera, as a completely separate entity and recently renamed themselves Reburn. We wish them every success.

The 4A Games you know and love have not changed, and we are not rebranding. We are the same developers of Metro that brought you Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, Metro Redux, and Metro Exodus.

We’re humbled to see everyone’s support for us, our work, and their love for the Metro series. We can’t wait to celebrate Metro 2033’s 15th birthday in March with all of you, and at a later date, show you what we’ve been working on.

Now let’s get back to making Metro!

The 4A Games team.

The next Metro

As we said in our last studio update, in 2022 a full-scale russian invasion changed how we wanted to tell the story of the next Metro game. As art became life for many of our developers in Ukraine, we drew from that lived experience to create an even darker story, those themes already present in Metro becoming ever-more apparent and important. As conflict, the struggle for power, the horrors of tyranny, and the price of freedom have become part of our lives over the past 3+ years, we are still living and working during this wartime, and that inevitably shapes the games we make.

Metro has always had a hard-hitting, political, anti-war and often emotional story - and you can be sure these themes will continue thanks to our ongoing collaboration with franchise creator, author, and activist Dmitry Glukhovsky.

Dmitry has always spoken out against the war in Ukraine from the start – a courageous decision for any russian, that has seen him sentenced to jail (in absentia) - and we are proud to have him as a friend and co-creator as we tell this next, and never more relevant chapter of Metro together.

Rest assured, you are in for quite the ride.
