StoryI think the story around the utautai is very entertaining and the mysteries keep you interested and push you forward. In addition to many dark moments there are also plenty of laughs to be had, obvious comedic moments and basically all of Zero's deliciously witty and hurtful comments. Zero is a badass, and all the other characters are refreshingly varied and each have their own vices. The backstories of characters however aren't really shown in the game that much, so to get the most out of the game it's definitely recommended/needed to read the backstories on the site.
Gameplay
The gameplay is a step up from the previous games/Nier and centers around the use of four different weapons which can be switched to mid-combo and some dragon riding. Don't expect some deep combo system, it does its job and manages to keep you entertained. Most entertaining/addicting to me is getting new weapons, upgrading these, see how they change and take them out for a spin in the challenge missions. The weapon designs are varied and mostly original. Also, chakrams.
Graphics
I like the graphical style of the characters and there is some visually nice level design. The graphics however make it truly clear that this game didn't have the budget that it deserved. This isn't what you'd expect from a late 2013 Square Enix game. I'm not completely sure, but it almost seems like the 5 year old FFXIII looks better. Of course you'd think that FFXIII is an rpg and this is an action game, so you'd have to sacrifice something. But that brings me to perhaps the second biggest flaw of the game, loading times. Pretty much every area is closed off by seals, like the dmc games, and these seals just take too long to dissipate and let you continue the game. They tried to mask the loading times like this, but it's just too apparent. So even in comparison with an rpg it makes no sense, because this game just consists of closed off areas.
The soundtrack/sounddesign/voice cast are amazing. No further explanation needed for fans of the series/Nier.
Framerate
Now the greatest flaw of the game, the framerate. I don't know where to begin with this one, even with a single enemy and the help of the dragon it takes a considerable dip. So imagine what happens when there's an area full of enemies, you call for the dragon to help and you enter utautai mode. Sometimes it feels like the game comes to a standstill. I think this can also be blamed on the budget, or perhaps the people who worked on the engine. But whatever it is. it is a sin. You can clearly see the love and effort that went into most of this game, it's almost depressing that it's plagued by the framerate problems and loading times during levels.
This was far longer and convoluted than what I intended, but I'm guessing rpg fans don't mind reading right. At first I just wanted to talk about the framerate, but got a little too passionate about trying to explain why the game with its problems is still very much worth it.
Conclusion
In my opinion all the good outweighs the bad by such a large margin that it doesn't even matter. This is easily one of my favorite games of the year together with Metal Gear Rising and even that game had its share of bad things, but kept me entertained for more than a hundred hours unlike big releases like The Last of Us/GTAV etc. But the loading times and framerate problems cannot be avoided. You'll think about it every time you experience them.
This is one of my favorite series, so I'll keep supporting it. Bought the Japanese digital version because I speak/read Japanese but live in Europe and wanted to play it on release. I'll probably buy the digital-only English version here to show some overseas support and I'll get the physical Japanese version whenever I'm in Japan.
So to whomever is interested in the game, BUY IT! Hopefully some things get patched, but it's totally worth it. Any other thoughts of people playing the game right now?
