Castlevania dev's next title will be a new IP

MercurySteam's next project will be a new IP, Konami producer Dave Cox has revealed, stating that the publisher has "enormous faith in them as a developer".

 


Cox discussed the developer's next title on Twitter earlier today while responding to reports stating that MercurySteam is to retire from Castlevania after completing development on Lords of Shadow 2, due for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC later this year.

 


"When I said we are done with Castlevania, it's because we want to move forward with MercurySteam on a new project in a new universe!" Cox said. "Why???... Because we are extremely happy with our partner and we have enormous faith in them as a developer."

 


Cox later confirmed to VideoGamer.com that MercurySteam's new title would be a new IP.

Lords of Shadow 2 devs Mercury Steam confirm they are working on a next-gen game:

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 developer Mercury Steam has confirmed to us that they are working on a next-gen project.
Speaking to Pixel Enemy in a Lords of Shadow 2 interview set to be published tomorrow, we asked franchise producer Dave Cox if they’re working on a next-gen game to which he verified but can’t divulge anymore details.

Yes we are working on a project for next gen consoles but I can’t let you know just yet what we are cooking up.

Could it be the long-rumored Contra reboot Mercury Steam is supposed to be interested in?

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow developer Mercury Steam is working on a new project for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC that is "completely different" from the fantasy series it has been known for during recent years.
Producer Dave Cox made the announcement during a recent roundtable interview session for Lords of Shadow 2 attended by GameSpot. He also confirmed that this project will skip the Wii U, but did not explain why.

Though Cox wouldn't go into more detail about this next game, he teased in 2012 that Mercury Steam has a couple of "really cool ideas" in the works, adding that "it's no secret that I'm a big fan of Contra and I'd like to do something in that universe."

Also in the interview, Cox explained that Mercury Steam had a number of ideas that never made it into Lords of Shadow 2. These ideas, including unspecified combat mechanics, may come to fruition in the developer's new game, Cox said.
