The Crew has been in development for four years

The Crew was originally conceived of as a current-gen release, but got too big for this generation’s boots.

In a new interview with Digital Trends, creative director Julian Gerighty said The Crew has been in the works for quite some time – but not because if development troubles.

“This game started over four years ago. The game hasn’t changed, its just taken that long to get it working and working as well as we want it to be working,” he said.

“All of the concepts that we have here are concepts that the team has been working on for the last ten years. The massive open world that’s shared with hundreds of other players? That’s something that the team did for Test Drive Unlimited, which was ahead of its time.”

How far ahead of its time? Well, given Ubisoft’s new obsession with shared worlds, about one generation. In fact, The Crew has a bit of a lead on its rivals, having begun life as a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 level title before being moved over to next-gen when the project outgrew the hardware.

“It happened about a year and a half ago, where we realized we can push this a little bit further, we can push the personalization of the world, the non-procedural nature of the world, a little bit further if we do it on Xbox One and PS4,” Gerighty said.

“So our Miami is radically different from our New York, which is normal but it takes a lot of work to get it to that level of quality. And that’s only possible on this next-generation.”

Ubisoft managed to keep The Crew secret until May, which is a pretty decent effort; the racer was formally announced at E3 2013.

It boasts over 10,000 km of road and no player limit. Expect The Crew on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Q1 2014.

A me 'sto gioco ispira un casino. L'idea di poter girare liberamente in una riproduzione degli stati uniti, incontrando gente random con cui gareggiare.. salvo poca roba i racing non mi fanno impazzire, ma questo sembra tanta roba.

The Crew: le versioni Xbox One e Ps4 saranno bloccate a 30 fps

The Crow sarà lanciato su Xbox One, Ps4 e PC all'inizio del prossimo anno.

Ubisoft's upcoming MMO-racer The Crew will feature a version of New York City that's slightly bigger than Grand Theft Auto IV's Liberty City. That's according to the game's lead designer Serkan Hassan, who made the claim when asked whether the game would be supported with additional location DLC in an interview with IGN. He also revealed that New York is just one of around 16 cities that will appear in the finished game...so expect to lose a significant chunk of time if you want to see everything.

The Crew: The Days Of A Loading Screen Are All Gone

One of the features of the PS3/Xbox 360 generation of games has been the prolonged loading or initial install times. Games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us and most recently GTA V.
At ********* Expo 2013, Nick Silversides from The Average Gamer asked Serkan Hassan, lead designer of The Crew, Ubisoft’s upcoming PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC open world racer about the amount of game loading the player can expect.

The Crew: Ivory Tower explains why it’s not current-gen, praises consistency across next-gen formats

Speaking with CVG, creative director Julian Garrity was asked if The Wii U’s hardware ability, network capability or sales has seen Ubisoft skipped it in favour of next-gen formats.
“It’s a combination of those factors,” he replied, “and to be honest it’s not even a Wii U question, it’s more an issue of current gen as well. I’ve been on the project for the last two years and it’s got a history beyond that, and the target platform was always high-end PC in order to realise our visualisation of what the game should be and what it could offer.

“It’s a nice coincidence for us in many ways that the next-gen consoles have come along at the time that they have and that they have the architecture they have because it’s allowed us to make a pretty smooth transition to them.

“But honestly I think it was really an issue of the number of compromises we’d have to make on a number of platforms, not just Wii U. It would have been: “Well, we could do this but what would the impact be and what would that take away from what we were originally visualising?” That’s really the reason behind it. It’s a shame but, you know, things move on.”

Garrity was then asked why The Crew is coming to PS4 and Xbox One, when surely the industry’s technical understanding of current formats is at its peak – seeing as we’re at the cycle’s end. He replied, “I think the approach both of the manufacturers have taken in terms of the core of their systems has been a big help. I remember the days of people tearing their hair out at the thought of having to port to PlayStation 3 in the early days and I’ve not experienced any of that this time around.

“There are always challenges, for sure, with a multi-platform release but there’s a much greater consistency in terms of not only what the machines are capable of but also how the machines operate. It’s not been so bad for us but I think the key to that was the fact that for as long as I’ve been on the project we’ve led on PC, and we’ve seen that with a lot of people now.

“A lot of people are saying, well, regardless of what the sales platform may be, by taking that approach and leading on PC you’re going to put all of the versions on a very good platform and then from there you can look at what each one offers you and how you can push to maximise what that machine can do.

“But it’s been a good start for us and, you know, we’re not releasing until next year so we’ve still got some time to push those versions even further now that the specs have become more stable.”

Discussing the delay of Watch Dogs and The Crew, Ubisoft said it expects the titles to sell over 6.2 million and 2.5 million units, respectively.

Martinez said the numbers for the The Crew were a bit lower due to its “limited potential” as a driving game, and also due to the fact it is only releasing on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, compared to Watch Dogs and its multiplatform release.

“We generally have spoken to about over 2.5 million units,” said Martinez via VideoGamer. “We’ll see where we go and we believe that we have a nice potential for the future.”
