Rainbow Six Patriots is said to have been redesigned from scratch three times now, according to internet sleuth Superannuation.

UPDATE: We’ve just asked our local Ubisoft rep to respond to the rumour and to tell us if Rainbow Six Patriots is still in development at the company. The company declined to comment. Make of that what you will.

ORIGINAL STORY:

While Superannuation’s track record is solid, please do treat his as rumour until we hear from Ubisoft. We’ve sent them an email, but we’re not holding our breath.

Last we heard, Rainbow Six Patriots “wasn’t working,” and had to be remade, according to Ubisoft’s North American president Laurent Detoc.

At the time he said, “We had a core team. They had a good vision. They got started, and then the game wasn’t working. So [they had] to start again. There’s an editorial group in Ubisoft, a big group, very influential. If the game is not good enough, they say it’s not good enough. Most of the time, the team will say, ‘yeah, I know.’ But sometimes they want to continue in a direction where you say, ‘no, it’s not going to work.’

“Rainbow had to be remade. Now they’re going to have the benefit of the new consoles, if and when it comes out. It’s one of those examples where you try, it doesn’t work, you try again. If it doesn’t work, we’re not going to bring it to you.”

Back at E3 2013, we also heard that the shooter had moved to next-gen which, given that both PS4 and Xbox One have launched, seems obvious.

We’ll update if we hear back from Ubisoft.

Rainbow Six Patriots ha avuto una storia decisamente travagliata: presentato alla fine del 2011, con uscita prevista per il 2012, il gioco è stato in realtà riprogettato almeno tre volte, ma non è stato cancellato e lo sviluppo è ancora in corso. Lo rivela l'insider Superannuation, che cita il profilo LinkedIn di Thomas Begne, programmatore canadese al lavoro dallo scorso mese di aprile su un progetto legato a Rainbow Six presso UbiSoft Montreal. Con ogni probabilità, il titolo sarà annunciato nuovamente all'E3 come progetto per PC e console next-gen.

Dopo tre anni di travagliato sviluppo, il progetto Rainbow Six Patriots è stato ufficialmente eliminato e sostituito da un nuovo capitolo della serie intitolato Rainbow Six Siege.Lo sviluppo del nuovo progetto è cominciato 18 mesi fa, con una particolare attenzione riservata al multiplayer asimmetrico. Il concept di base vede due squadre opposte in alcuni scontri alternandosi in difesa e attacco.

La squadra in attacco dovrà fare irruzione in alcune stanze ed eliminare gli avversari, senza respawn a causa del ritmo sostenuto dell'azione.

I difensori dovranno invece fortificare le proprie posizioni e piazzare trappole. Un sistema di distruzione procedurale permetterà di abbattere qualsiasi porta, muro o finestra. Il motore utilizzato sarà l'Anvil e le piattaforme previste sono PC, PlayStation 4 e Xbox One. L'uscita è per ora prevista per il 2015. Anche se al momento il multiplayer è la parte a cui è stata dedicata più attenzione, Ubisoft Montreal ha dichiarato che un'esperienza single-player verrà comunque realizzata utilizzando questi stessi sistemi.

- Designed to be asynchronous

- A game of attack and defense

- Terrorists can spend on fortifying their base

- Spend on barbed wire, metal barricades, nail shut windows, drill peep holes in walls, set traps

- Rainbow Six team can scout around the house, trying to determine how the defenses are being laid out

- Becomes a standard shooter and a game of siege and counter-siege once the match starts

“The Rainbow Six team is prepared to assault and the enemy can counter that assault with tools. We’re really pushing the asymmetrical aspect of the game up to the point where each round is separated into two phases where there’s a preparation phase for each side, attackers and defenders, that’s why you see where the defense is deploying, what strategies those guys are using, where they’re putting the objectives… and you select with your teammates the path you’re going to take it’s like a sandbox, so you can approach it from any side, so even the top floor. After that preparation phase you switch into the assault, so trying to execute your plan as much as possible. so we’re big on having the asymmetrical aspect in the game.

“We are able to bring a lot of tactics to this mode. It’s more real-time strategy instead of pre-set everything on the map.”

- Matchaes are designed to lessen the wait for those players quickly wiped out thanks to the no-respawn and one-shot-one-kill systems

- While some character classes may have body armor or shields, those who don’t will be killed with a single shot

- No respawn once dead

- Players can instead move around on the map controlling a small drone and providing intel to their still-living teammates

- Drone can be shot

- Unforgiving multiplayer was driven in part by survival games like DayZ and Rust

“The tension was very high, just because of the permadeath. It helps to tell a story.”

- The game wasn’t originally going to have a single life in multiplayer

- But Marquis fell in love with the idea when the developers starting talking about the game’s roots

“We started with some different ideas, but the moment we said we wanted to try the one life [concept] on the prototype, that’s when we started to see results in terms of tension and experience. Everyone was like, ‘Shit it’s bringing so much to how you play,’ that I knew it that was how we were going to make the game and the whole game is going to be one life.”

- On top of that, the siege aspect of the game affords players more protection from bullets, cutting down on the chance of a death right after a match starts

- Marquis believes the recent influx of hard-as-nails games, titles like DayZ, Rust, Dark Souls, 1001 Spikes and Spelunky shows that there is a growing base of players looking for new, more difficult challenges in the games they play

- According to Marquis, testers thus far have been absolutely “insane” about the game and increased difficulty

- Single-player campaign and co-op will be included

“We can’t tell you too much unfortunately about the campaign or about the co-op,. We are focusing on multiplayer now. but we want to have the siege experience as much as possible, it’s the central element of the game.”

Rainbow Six: Patriots, the controversial, long-delayed anti-terrorism shooter, is officially, and permanently dead, Ubisoft confirmed this week.

"It's not in development anymore," said Alexandre Remy, Rainbow Six brand director. "The main decision was some months after Patriots was announced in 2011 that was the first moment we knew the first generation of new consoles were coming. So obviously at that moment and for a franchise such as Rainbow we needed to decide if we could make something for next-gen and we were already pretty advanced in the development of Patriots.

Ma chi se ne frega di Patriots, a me garba una cifra questo Siege.

Non assomiglia a Cod, e questo è un bene a prescindere; la vita non si ricarica da sola, poi puoi inserire le cariche per fare breccia dove vuoi, e non in punti prestabiliti: è molto interessante questa feature.

Che dire, a me ispira parecchio; Rainbow Six è e rimane una pietra miliare nel firmamento degli shooters e mi pare che questo Siege, a giudicare già dalla pre-alpha, ne mantenga alto il nome.

Questo E3 mi sta dando parecchie soddisfazioni.
