Walkthrough

When the level starts you will immediately be attacked by four Barons of Hell surrounding you. Find a safe spot and take them out with your most powerful weapon. Once they've been taken care of, pick up the various weapons and other goodies in each of the "arms" of the first area. Afterwards, go through the door in the eastern "arm". The next area holds eight Cacodemons. Pick up the Soul Sphere in the center of this room if you need it. Once all the enemies have been disposed of, head to the eastern end of this "+"-shaped room. There are two lion-faced reliefs on this wall. Open the wall between them to reveal the level's exit room. Press the skull switch to the left to get the blue key, then open the blue door to get the red key. Open the red door to get the yellow key, and finally open the yellow door to reveal the exit teleporter.

A much safer option is to use the apparent dislike between Baron's and Cacodemons. If you immediately start running in circles around the Barons of Hell, you will 'Sheppard' or round them up and they will follow you as a group. Now run into the eastern arm and do the same with the Cacodemons, running a circle around them - do not fire as this gives them time to zero in on you. Then run back to the Baron room, accept a blast or three from the Barons and Cacodemons, and run into one of the corners. At this point, you can expect to be completely left alone as the Cacodemons and Barons will have hit each other and start a huge infighting sequence. You can sit back and watch, then finish one or two creatures which have been badly damaged. In using the Sphere you'll regain any health lost and more plus won't have lost much (if any) ammo. This seems to be the designers intention, as in each room, there are bodies of the other creature.

Secrets

  1. In the north end of the map is an octagonal grey brick room with exits in the four cardinal directions (as well as the entrance you came from in the southwest). Go through the door in the west; the area behind it counts as a secret. Beware of the crusher here.
  2. From the octagonal hub mentioned above, go through the door in the north. Step onto the raised platform in the next room to trigger the secret, as well as an enemy ambush.
  3. After getting the yellow skull key, follow the winding corridor in the east of the octagonal hub. Open the yellow door and flip the "exit" switch. It's a fake, and will lower you into another enemy-infested area. Go through the door ahead of you to get back up.

Secrets

  1. In the hall connecting the warehouse and the outdoor area in the east, climb the small staircase leading to a small control room. Follow another set of stairs down to a switch. Flip it to open a secret room behind you.
  2. In the corridor lined with hemi-cylindrical "vats" in the west, there's a narrow opening between two of the vats on the west wall that leads outside.
  3. At the north end of secret 1 is a switch on the wall. Flip it to open another secret area.
  4. In the room in the southwest with several small slime pools in alcoves. In one of these alcoves is a small tunnel leading to a rocket launcher and a teleporter.
  5. After getting the red keycard, go through the teleporter in secret 4. Open the red door and flip the switch behind it.
  6. After flipping the switch in secret 5, as well as the switch behind the blue door, go all the way back to the starting room. A nook holding a soul sphere and a bulk cell will be accessible.

Walkthrough

You start the level in a small octagonal room. Pick up the combat armor here before you do anything else. There is a short pillar in the center of this room with a switch on each of it four sides. Pressing one causes the stairs in front of it to raise. Press all four switches. Walk up any of the four sets of stairs until the wall with the crucified Baron of Hell ahead of you opens, but do not walk through yet. Open the three remaining Baron-walls in this manner as well -- this allows you to re-enter the starting area if you need to. Once they've all been opened, exit to the huge outdoor area. There are a number of Lost Souls outside; you'll want to destroy them so they don't get in your way later. Walk around the building until you find the Cyberdemon -- or he finds you. Use the pillars for protection if you need to. The four rooms inside the main building contain rockets and occasionally soul spheres if you need them. Don't be afraid to waste ammo, because this is the last level of the episode anyway. Once the Cyberdemon dies, the level, and episode, ends.

Walkthrough


You start in front of a closed eye, which is a switch. Press it and the platform you're on will rise, revealing a big outdoor area, a red wall with a door ahead of you, and some imps, ammo and (on I'm Too Young To Die and Hey, Not Too Rough) health. After you have taken down the imps, press the switch to the left of the door to open it.

On Hurt Me Plenty and higher, there are cacodemons on the other side. Kill them and move forward to a fork in the path. Go straight and turn left into a curved bridge with blood on both sides. There is a shotgun here. Run quickly across the bridge through the fake wall before it lowers (and pick up the box of shells on the other side). There may be imps on the other side of the fake wall, which depends on your skill level. When you're done with the imps (if any) go to the right and open the door with the face on it. Then go to the fork and take the other path.

(If you ran too slow or fell off, you'll be in the blood and you'll take damage. In this case, run to the wall at the left and turn left when it ends. Run to the end of the blood and go up the stairs. Then go the other path in the fork.)

Open the door and kill the enemies that you see. Then open the door to the right and go into a narrow hallway with demons. Kill them and open the next door into a room with red vases and a few items. Pick them up and enter the next room, which is filled with imps. Once you are done with them, collect secret #1 and go through the exit door. Collect some health and ammo, then go on the teleporter to exit the level.

  1. In the room before the exit room, open the hidden door on the left to reveal a rocket launcher, shotgun shells, and a stimpack.

  1. In the "thumb" is a small lava pit. Walk over it to lower a nearby wall, revealing a chaingun.
  2. Below the little and ring fingers is a rock shaped like an arrow if you look at the automap. Open the wall this arrow is pointing to; inside is a plasma rifle and a medikit.
  3. At the end of the middle finger is an arrow on the floor pointing to a switch; flip it to get a soul sphere.

Secrets

  1. From the start, hang a right, then turn left into a hall with several lion-faced walls. Between the last two on the right is a dark hidden hallway leading to a secret area.
  2. In secret 1, cross the bridge and follow the path to the end. Flip the switch to raise the sunken floor. The next room counts as a secret also.
  3. At the end of the lion-faced hall is a circular room where the path splits off in two; follow the left one and drop into the slime pool. Hidden around the right corner is a chaingun.
  4. Once you've reached the cement-walled room in the northwest (with two balconies overlooking it, one of which is fenced in), follow the narrow hall next to the fenced-in balcony. Go up the stairs to the left; the balcony itself counts as a secret. A nearby blood/lava pool contains a soul sphere and a BFG9000.
  5. In the outdoor area with the blue door at the northern end of the map, there is a raised platform in the center of the room resembling an altar. Walk around to the back and step on the brown floor. A wall across the way and to the right will open up. Inside is a computer area map.
  6. Similar to secret 5, but on the opposite side of the entrance to the area. This wall must be opened manually, however.

Secrets

  1. From the start, go left and walk along the path crossing a blood pool. Resting in the blood at the far end of the room is a teleporter; go through it to reach an otherwise inaccessible area.
  2. After passing through the blue door, take the door on the left. Continue along this path through another two doors until you reach a room with three other exits. Take the one to the left (south). Inside this next room is a "<" shaped wall; open it to reveal a secret.
  3. From secret 2, return to the previous room. Take the small door to the north. Walk through the lava and drop into the pit. A BFG rests at the bottom. Flip the switch to get out.
  4. After going through the red door, you'll be in a narrow hallway with three alcoves to the right. Open the back wall of the third alcove to get a radsuit.

Secrets

  1. In the starting area, take the door on the far left. Open the wall on the left in the following room to get a pair of light amps.
  2. On the west side of the map is a wide corridor lined with a series of red brick columns. There is a door on the west wall; continue through to reach a not-so-secret area with a soul sphere and plasma rifle.
  3. In the northwest of the map there is a bright red room with damaging floors. On one of the walls here is a pair of blue symbols. Open the section of wall between them to get a radsuit.
  4. Take the teleporter in the aforementioned red room. You'll be taken to the center of the courtyard. The southern of the four structures surrounding the center teleport will have opened, and contains a yellow skull key.
  5. With your newly acquired yellow key, make your way to the east end of the courtyard. There is some glowing red "writing" high on the wall. Open the wall below and slightly to the right of the symbols to get a chainsaw and another soul sphere. To exit the courtyard, take the teleporter in the northwest.
  6. From the room you end up in after exiting the courtyard, go through either door, then the door next to it on the other side. Walk through this teleporter and you'll be taken to the courtyard center again. The structure north of the central teleport will open up; inside are some goodies.
  7. In the north of the map is a corridor shaped like an upside-down "U". Search the outer walls on the western side of this corridor. One of them will open, leading to a secret area overlooking the bright red room from earlier.
  8. At the north end of the map is a red brick room with four crushers guarding switches (the blue skull key is in this room as well). Press the switch in the southeast crusher and three alcoves will open on each side of the room. The one containing a rocket launcher (the middle one on the east side) counts as a secret.
  9. Go through the teleporter in the southeastern corner of the courtyard from one of the doors inside the building (i.e. not from the courtyard itself). Like secrets 4 and 6, one of the structures surrounding the central teleport will open up; its inside counts as a secret.
  10. Same as secret 9, but use the southwestern teleporter. Again, you must enter from inside the building rather than the courtyard.

Secrets

  1. Go inside the brown vine-covered building. Inside are two teleporters. Take the one on the right, and you'll be taken to a ledge with a plasma rifle on it.
  2. Enter the green marble building. There are two candles on the floor against opposite walls here. Open the wall behind the candle on the right for a bulk cell.
  3. From secret 2, open the wall behind the other candle and take the teleport. Once you're through, drop onto the platform ahead of you to get the chainsaw. Note that you must get this secret before collecting the blue key, or the chainsaw platform will raise up even to the roof, and completing the map with 100% secrets will become impossible.
  4. Warning: this secret contains the secret exit switch and is inescapable, so only enter it once you are ready to exit the level. Pick up one of the invulnerability spheres from this level and make your way back through the teleporter from secret 2. This time, inch along the platform you arrive on to your right and around a corner. You'll see a blue box in the water below. Position yourself directly across from this box and face the red brick wall. Fire your rocket launcher at the wall and run backwards simultaneously, and you should be fired into the box, the invulnerability sphere absorbing all damage you would have taken. It's possible to straferun or jump (in some source ports) into the box, but the rocket jump is the intended (and easiest) method.

 
E3M9 (secret level)

Overview

On entering the level the player becomes aware that the scenery is familiar. The map is identical to E3M1 until the player reaches the area which formed the exit of this map.

The player is suddenly confronted with a Cyberdemon in place of the level exit. From this point onwards, sections of the map have opened up to reveal new regions and more enemies. The player must retrace their steps to beginning in order to find the true exit.

It is possible to lock yourself out of the first room by pressing the button to lower the first door in the level and then quickly running through the door before it closes. This will prevent you from beating the level. (Tested on the Collectors Edition of Doom)

Secrets

  1. In the southwestern corner of the map is a pool of blood with a switch in it. Flipping this switch opens the large octagonal structure in the area to the north. Inside the structure is a pentagram with a soul sphere on it that counts as a secret.
  2. Directly to the southeast of the aforementioned pentagram structure is a vaguely hexagonal green marble structure. Walk around the back of this structure and two of its walls will open, revealing a secret area.
  3. In the northeastern corner of the map is a maze of blood-filled tunnels. From its start, head right, right, left, then right. You'll end up at a secret platform with a BFG.
  4. After flipping the switch next to the red skull key in the blood maze, return to the central area after taking one of the teleporters in the maze. Go through the southern of the two blue doors in the east. In a nearby alcove is a switch; press it to lower a wall back outside. Flip a second switch behind the newly lowered wall to raise a bridge to the "teleport tube" in the southeastern corner of this room. Go through that teleport to be taken to a secret area.

Walkthrough

To complete this level, the player must kill the Spider Mastermind, which appears here as the Boss for the episode. Almost all ammo is on a raised walkway above the main arena, except for the Plasma rifle, which is in a small room in the center of the map. The only way to access the walkway is from a set of steps to the north of the central building, or by walking along the walkway upon entering the level. This lack of ammo provides extra challenge.

An effective strategy for this level is to deliberately cause the other monsters present on the level to attack the Spider Mastermind. The Spider Mastermind will then become preoccupied battling with the other monsters and will ignore the player's fire until the attacking monsters are killed. See the demo below.

Secrets

  1. Drop into the nukage pool ahead of you at the start of the level. Press the use key on the end of the platform to the right to lower it, exposing a hidden tunnel with a rocket launcher at its end. Open the wall to the left of the rocket launcher to reveal a room with a pair of teleporters. Each takes you to a corresponding ledge near the level's beginning.
  2. In the room behind the red door, make your way left around the rectangular structure and press the use key on the torch. This lowers the rectangular structure, uncovering a hidden "NIИ" logo. Walking over the logo triggers the secret and unleashes some Barons, and may also trap you inside for a short time. Note: The area surrounding the "NIИ" letters is tagged as a secret sector, as opposed to the letters themselves, so this secret may be a bit tricky to register.

Secrets

  1. In the smaller, isolated lava pit in the southwest of the level, drop into the lava and flip the switch to raise a bridge. Step into the small triangle of lava next to the switch to open an exit out of this pit. At the top of the stairs is a teleporter. Open the wall to the left just before the teleporter; behind it is a secret cache. The right wall at the back of the secret room also opens, and you can take the other side of the teleporter to a separate secret room.
  2. After opening the blue "door", run up the stairs and across the raised platform with the Cyberdemon guarding it until you hear the sound of a door opening behind you. Run back down to the lower wooden platforms, and a teleporter will have appeared. Go through it to telefrag the Cyberdemon, saving you a lot of work. Pick up the BFG and lower the wall in front of you to exit.
  3. Upon lowering the wall to exit secret 2, a wall back down in the western wall of the main lava pit will lower temporarily. Quickly run into the opening to reach the exit to E4M9: Fear.

  1. Once in the large circular room in the south, go through the door to the west and continue right up the stairs. After passing through the next door, turn around and open the differently textured wall just left of it. Inside is a berserk pack.
  2. Open the wall directly across from the exit switch to get a backpack.

Secrets

  1. From the start, drop onto the ground in front of you and head down through the staircase. In the next room, take the upward staircase and continue along the hall until you reach a lion-faced door. Before you reach it, a room behind you will open, unleashing some enemies, but also allowing you to get some goodies.
  2. In the wooden room at the far south of the map (where the red skull key lowers to) is an alcove in the west. There are four torches here, the two easternmost of which are standing on secret sectors. Unfortunately, you cannot trigger these secrets unless clipping is turned off and you walk directly through the torches.
  3. See secret 2.
  4. (4-22) Open the northern wall in the same alcove as secrets 2 and 3. There is a set of stairs leading up to a room with a soul sphere and some ammo. Every single sector leading up to and including the soul sphere room counts towards the level's secret score.

  1. In the second room, take the elevator up and continue left around the walkway until you reach a green torch. Press it to lower the floor you're standing on. Continue through two archways to get a berserk pack.
  2. Return to the green torch and press it again, but only pass through the first archway. The floor in the second room will raise along with the first lift, taking you up to a rocket launcher.

  1. Go through the red door in the same room where the red key is found. In the following area, open the 45-degree-angle wall to reveal a small secret closet.
  2. Just before the yellow door is a narrow river of blood you must cross. Follow this to the left and open the gargoyle-faced wall. Open the wall to the left (with the gap in the bottom) in the next small room to get a berserk pack.

Secrets


  1. Once you arrive at the "castle" near the beginning of the level, follow the white rocky wall along to the left. At the far end, fairly close to the fortress wall (and left of the large gnarled tree), is an alcove. Walk straight through the back wall to reach a secret tunnel.
  2. From secret 1, drop into the lava "moat" and make your way to its south side. There is a small green marble platform with a torch on it about halfway to the huge lava pit deeper in the castle. Open the back wall of this platform to get a blur sphere, and ride the lift up to a soul sphere visible earlier in the level.
  3. The yellow skull key is located on an overlook with several barred windows. You can walk right through the bars in the rightmost window, however. In the lava pit below, open the wall between the floating skull decorations on the far side.
