I got an early Alone in the Dark copy from a mom & pop store and I've played 4 hours, according to the Playstation app. The campaign tracker says Im 40% of the way through the main story.
So far, I'm enjoying it but it's definitely a flawed game. The atmosphere, music, puzzles and writing are solid but the combat gameplay is definitely AA jank.
The gunplay is passable at best, mediocre at worst, the dodge basically doesn't work if enemies corner you, and the enemies themselves aren't all that interesting to fight because most of them just charge you head on.
With all the jankiness, you can really tell that this is developer Pieces Interactive's first survival horror game. However, despite the flawed combat, Alone in the Dark is still a decent survival horror game so far mainly because of the non-combat parts.
That said, so far I think it was a mistake to cast Jodie Comer as the main female lead Emily. Sometimes she sounds pretty good, usually in scenes where she can be laid back and bounce off someone else. But other times, when she's alone especially, she sounds so flat. David Harbour was good in the few scenes I saw him in though (Im playing as Emily and his detective character has barely been part of the plot).
