In the MSX version of Dragon Quest II, talking to the King of Ladatorm without having anything equipped to the princess will get the player the "Skimpy Swimsuit." According to a 2009 interview with series creator SUDA51, this game was originally meant to be the last to feature Travis Touchdown as the series protagonist. During Season 3 of the Arena sidequest, the final boss is a giant Muruk that flies into the arena while spinning very fast with flames shooting out of its shell. This is most likely a reference to Gamera, from the films of the same name, who is a giant monster turtle that flies in a similar fashion.
