In the MSX version of Dragon Quest II, talking to the King of Ladatorm without having anything equipped to the princess will get the player the "Skimpy Swimsuit." According to a 2009 interview with series creator SUDA51, this game was originally meant to be the last to feature Travis Touchdown as the series protagonist. However, due to the delayed production of subsequent entries Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes and No More Heroes III, he changed his mind, instead wishing to focus on how much older Travis had become since the second game.

The game was announced as simply "Lords of Shadow" without the Castlevania name. This was done to keep the game's announcement from upstaging the release of Castlevania Judgement, as well as keep Konami's plans to change the series direction a secret.

During Season 3 of the Arena sidequest, the final boss is a giant Muruk that flies into the arena while spinning very fast with flames shooting out of its shell. This is most likely a reference to Gamera, from the films of the same name, who is a giant monster turtle that flies in a similar fashion.
