Though the game can run at 60 frames per second, the team had to lower the framerate to 30 frames per second when using Ninpo attacks due to hardware limitations. This change came to the disappointment of director Tomonobu Itagaki who strongly believed a ninja's magic should be "impressive and powerful" and who wanted the development team to use every resource they had to make the Ninpo attacks live up to his vision.
Whenever a ghost enters a side tunnel, its speed is cut nearly in half. They also slow down when they are frightened which then, for the first four levels, Pac-Man speeds up.

The director for the United States localization needed a name for Porky's father so he named him "Aloysius," a reference to Looney Tunes where Daffy Duck gives the name to a giant to save himself from being giant food, because he thought the name was "dumb and funny."
When the game was initially released, it was received with negative press, as many Japanese players found it too buggy. In 2004, a director's cut was released in which they fixed several bugs, as well as adding new features and two additional characters. The director's cut was the same as the copy released in North America and the PAL regions. This is why the back of the North American case states extra features.
Geese Howard's design is based on the character King, the main antagonist of SNK's arcade beat-em-up The Super Spy. His name comes from one of the bosses of the same game.
Early in development, the main character of Rayman was a 10-year old boy named Jimmy who created a world called Hereitscool inside his computer. When this world was threatened by Mister Dark, Jimmy was sucked into his computer and became Rayman. Most of this plotline was quickly abandoned.

There was a glitch in the stairway level wherein, by getting hit by a ghost hidden behind a door when you are on your last life, you can no longer be damaged by ghosts that don't come out of doors.
