According to the translation, Marcus and the Gears are now living on an aircraft carrier known as Raven's Nest after sinking the city of Jacinto at the end of Gears of War 2. Humanity now consists of isolated colonies, with no resistance or Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) to speak of.
The Locust aren't faring much better, finding themselves at odds with the Lambent, Locusts who were mutated by Imulsion. The Lambent are bigger, tougher (they can comfortably engage two or three Gears at once) and, just when you think they're about to die, they'll charge at you and explode.
The game begins with the arrival of former COG head honcho Prescott on Raven's Nest who informs Marcus that his dad is not, in fact, dead and has found a way to ensure the survival of humanity. Which is handy. At this point, we're guessing, the Gears embark on a quest to find his old man and apparently Baird and Cole (yes, still alive) will have their own subplot this time around.
Weapons-wise, there's a new subterranean grenade launcher (which buries explosives beneath the ground), a double-barrelled shotgun and a new Pendulum Lancer rifle. Intriguingly, each weapon will have a unique execution move this time around – you can cut throats with the Pendulum, snap necks with the shotgun, squash heads with the mortar and set people on fire (from the inside out) with the flame-thrower.
Mech fans will also be pleased to find out about a new bit of kit known as the Silverback. It's basically a mech with a mounted machine gun and grenade launcher and, while clearly a powerful offensive weapon, can also be used defensively to drop shields for team-mates.
With four-player co-op confirmed for the game, Epic has also tweaked the collectibles in the game meaning you can now pass weapons and ammo between squad mates, presumably in an effort to reduce squabbling.
Aaaaaaaand we're spent.
