The Game Business: Physint budget at Xbox is reportedly around $400M

This new strategy requires the company to invest in certain areas and it is investing. It's just signed a big game from Hideo Kojima, for example, with a budget reportedly around $400 million and is investing in a new Halo team as well.

Schreier:
I am hesitant to get into exact numbers without seeing documentation or corroborating them with multiple firsthand sources, as always.

And there are a lot of different numbers here. There's the number Physint was originally signed for at PlayStation, the number it was approaching, the number that came up during negotiations, the number it would have been with certain A-list actors attached, the number that Xbox agreed to, and the number it will actually cost by the time it comes out.

All that said, someone at Xbox with firsthand knowledge of the deal told me that they signed Physint for significantly less than this.

I was told similarly by first-hand sources with direct knowledge of the contracts that the figure for PHYSINT is far lower than what is being reported here. It has been suggested to me that the "$400 million" figure is potentially what Sony and PlayStation might've been on the hook for until they cancelled the deal. Xbox and Kojima are building towards their Xbox projects on a "fraction" of this reported figure.

During the chat (not the newsletter), I mentioned that Hideo Kojima was reportedly seeking $400 million for his game Physint. Now, regular listeners will know the 'report' I am talking about was just some rumours floating around Tokyo Game Show (I mentioned it in that week's Here's The Dring newsletter). It was nothing more than that. Anyway, it got picked up by the internet and I quickly had to clarify that it's just a rumour, and not something I'd stake my reputation on.
Which is just as well, as I now know that Xbox is paying far, far less than that number. Possibly even below $200 million. Regardless, the point I was making is that Xbox is still investing in big projects. It's not just cutting teams. And that's true no matter what it spent on the game.
