PlanetSide 2 is a free-to-play, massively multiplayer online first person shooter (MMOFPS). Empires fight on a massive scale where soldiers battle in an all-out planetary war on a scale never before seen in stunning, breathtaking detail. PlanetSide 2 battles persist when thousands of players align in this game that challenges the skill and grit through intense land, air and vehicle gameplay. Across four huge maps, players come together in enormous battles to win control of critical territories and key resources for their Empire. With an extensive skill tree and free-form class-based system, players customize their soldier, weapons and vehicles to match their play-style, as well as the needs of their squad, outfit or Empire. The world of PlanetSide 2 is massive and persistent with every soldier capable of making a difference. Key Features:
THREE WARING EMPIRES: Players will choose to align with one of three unique Empires – the militaristic, authoritarian Terran Republic, the rebellious, freedom-fighter faction New Conglomerate, or the technocratic, alien-influenced Empire Vanu Sovereignty. Each Empire has access to unique weapons, attachments, vehicles, abilities, and more.
MASSIVE WARFARE: Battles take place not between dozens of troops, but hundreds; with air and ground vehicles slugging it out alongside squads of troops. Each battleground holds valuable resources and key positions, and the Empire that can conquer (and manage to hold) these territories are rewarded with tech bonuses, greater access to equipment, and more.
ENORMOUS MAPS: PlanetSide 2 features four incredible and diverse continent maps with dozens of square kilometers of seamless gameplay space; every inch of which is hand-crafted, contestable space. Whether in open fields, tightly-packed urban centers or enormous outposts, victory requires calculated teamwork and a quick trigger finger to survive the massive battles.
PERSISTENCE THAT PAYS: In PlanetSide 2 the war isn’t won by a single base capture. The core gameplay of PlanetSide 2 is about holding crucial territories and controlling resources. Working strategically as a team to secure tactical positions, such as power plants and ammo depots, has long-lasting effects that can shift the tide of battle and provide key rewards and bonuses.
CLASS-BASED COMBAT: Players can build their soldier to match their play-style, as well as the needs of their squad, outfit or Empire. With six distinct classes to explore, each combat role, vehicle and weapon has extensive skill trees that will allow players to grow characters laterally, unlocking hundreds of weapons, attachments, equipment, specialized skills, vehicles, and more. Play as one of six distinct classes: 
Heavy Assault – Rush into the battle ahead, guns blazing. You are the dedicated foot soldier of Auraxis.
Light Assault – Go where the Heavies can’t with your short-burst jetpack. Pick a high spot, throw a grenade and surprise your foes!  
Combat Medic – Keep your fellow soldiers healed- it’s your job to revive fallen comrades.   
Infiltrator – Stealthy and silent, you are death from the shadows.  Whether you choose a knife from behind or a single shot from sniper’s nest, you are the enemy’s greatest fear.  
Engineer – A crucial support class with the ability to repair important gear including vehicles, terminals, and turrets.  Engineers can drop their own shielded turret and mow down advancing troops.  
MAX – Heavily armored, cannons for hands, and a disposition to match, you are the ruler of the battlefield and a walking mass of armored death.
OUTFIT TEAMWORK: Outfits play a very important role in each and every battle. From a small group of specialized soldiers or rapid response team, to a huge clan that can field multiple platoons of hundreds of players, outfits have access to unique customizations– allowing them to create their own identity and manage their reputation and overall role in the ongoing war.
VEHICLES & WEAPONS: Players are able to access a huge array of weapons and vehicles which can be extensively customized for player preference or purposed with unique attachments and add-ons earned in game to fit each player’s style.
PLAY FOR FREE: PlanetSide 2 is Free-To-Play with an additional in-game RMT marketplace with items that range from cosmetic camouflage patterns and armor paint jobs, to XP accelerators. Items that affect gameplay, such as weapon side-grades will be purchasable via resources earned in-game through gameplay and achievements.
VOICE INTEGRATION: Players are able to communicate with their squads both through keyboard and voice chat.​

My name is Matthew Higby and I have the privilege of working as the Creative Director on PlanetSide 2. My role on this team is to steer the game design vision and manage the design team responsible for the overall gameplay experience that players will encounter once they step foot in the game. So you know where I’m coming from, prior to PlanetSide 2 I worked on a number of SOE titles, including the original Star Wars Galaxies, EverQuest® II, Free Realms® and most recently, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures™. From the early days of development, original PlanetSide was a title that I respected, admired and had a hell-of-a-lot of fun playing. As an avid FPS gamer and fan of competitive online gaming and e-sports, being able to take part in the creation of the follow up to such an epic franchise is an absolute dream come true for me.

Of course, it takes an extremely talented team of artists, coders, designers, audio engineers, and production staff to build the enormous, incredible, unbelievably badass game experience that is PlanetSide 2. I’m really proud to be working with an extremely passionate and hard working team whose drive and determination inspires and amazes me daily. The PlanetSide 2 team members are some of the most talented and proven developers in the industry bringing together hundreds of years of collective experience from all over the gaming map especially the MMO and FPS genres-- and we are still growing. Together we are building the future of online gaming with PlanetSide 2.

It has been a little over two months since we officially unveiled PlanetSide 2 to the world and to say it has been a busy couple months is a huge understatement. We are really stoked at the reaction we have received from the PlanetSide community and are amped to relay our goals and aspirations for the game and inevitably create a direct back-and-forth communication with our players. This COMM-LINK will be a resource to the PlanetSide community; a place where we plan to deliver news, assets and information to keep you involved in the PlanetSide 2 development process. This is a place where we will share insight directly from the team on the game in our course to launching PlanetSide 2.

So, a bit about the team- our ridiculously talented art team is led by Senior Art Director, Tramell "T-Ray" Isaac. With an impressive resume that spans more than 15 years and includes games like Fallout, Fallout 2, Never Winter Nights 2, and the original PlanetSide, Tramell is a force to be reckoned with, often ending arguments with nothing more that his steely gaze.

With a project as technically ambitious as PlanetSide 2, we could not get anywhere without a brilliant group of engineers, technical architects and coders. We have some of the finest in the industry including our Technical Director, Ryan "Forge" Elam, who is not only one of the smartest and most dedicated teammates but he is also one of the nicest dudes around.

Heading up the whole crew is our Executive Producer, Joshua Hackney, who somehow manages to keep us all in line and at the same time keeps the energy drinks flowing, the paychecks signed and the suits and bean counters off our backs so that we can concentrate on making the best possible game.

There are a ton of reasons that we are all excited to work on PlanetSide 2 and for those of you who have not heard what we are building, allow me to lay out a few of the fundamental features so you can see why:

Our goal with PlanetSide 2 is to create a game where you will fight against and alongside thousands of players, competing simultaneously and directly against one another in massive battles featuring intense infantry action as well as incredible air and ground vehicle combat. You will be able to traverse enormous open-world maps featuring massive gameplay space and unique biospheres, punctuated by massive facilities, towers and bunkers. Persistent conquest warfare is facilitated by territory control where you will earn resources to unlock weapon add-ons, vehicle customizations, and more. No instancing here, everything is 100% PVP and 100% open world combat. And of course, a deep character customization and personalization will allow players to create your very own soldier, customize your weapons and vehicles to fit not only your own personal play style but the needs of your outfit or the entire empire.

All of these features come together to deliver what we feel will be not only the world’s best MMOFPS, but the ultimate online FPS experience. The feedback and excitement we have received from the PlanetSide community thus far has been amazing and we are just getting warmed up! Nel corso di una recente intervista, Matt Higby di Sony Online Entertainment ha avuto modo di discutere degli enormi ambienti che ospiteranno i giocatori in Planetside 2, atteso MMO/FPS in arrivo a data da destinarsi su PC. 


"Abbiamo spazi di gioco davvero enormi. Uno dei nostri più grandi sforzi nello sviluppo di questo progetto è stata la produzione artigianale di ogni singola area di quei continenti da otto chilometri quadrati."


 


"Anche se non è chiaro quanti continenti vanta Auraxis, le cifre indicano che ciascuno è circa delle stesse dimensioni dell'intera mappa di Far Cry 2 e nettamente più esteso degli interi mondi di Oblivion e Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas."


 


"A volte potrà succedere di ritrovarsi in battaglie in cui duecento persone lottano contro trenta, perché magari sono solo in trenta a difendere una base e poi improvvisamente duecento giocatori entrano da un altro gruppo e attaccano. Se si utilizza la tattica giusta e si fanno le cose nel modo corretto ci si può ancora divertire come un gruppo di venti persone che si difende da un assalto, ma questo è qualcosa di cui teniamo conto quando sviluppiamo il design dei livelli, cercando di capire cosa vogliamo in una determinata area."
