A lot of planning and thought goes into when Capcom announces its games and how it reveals information, to surprise and delight fans. But, of course, sometimes information leaks outside of marketing plans. How disruptive is that for the development team? Is it stressful for you?

Koshi Nakanishi:
In a way, I can take it personally as a positive thing, because the fact that people are so interested that they want to see the information we haven’t revealed yet, and then they start discussing online and speculating about things and reading those kind of information, it shows a huge amount of interest and passion on behalf of the fans.

So I can try and make my mind to take it as a positive thing that they really want to know more about the game, because they ultimately want to buy it.

That said, not all leaks are right. There are things out there that are wrong or on the right track, or on the wrong track, so we don’t really know until the game actually comes out whether it was disruptive to our plans or not, because it may not even be related to anything we’re doing.

Have you considered maybe putting some fake leaks out there, speaking loudly in a bar about some pretend characters, or similar?

KN:
We don’t need to make fake leaks, we’ve got enough out there already!

MK: Information appearing online in the form of a leak, whether it’s true or not, doesn’t really annoy me so much as the fact that information that has not yet been confirmed gets treated as gospel by people who just decided that it must be true.

They think about the game on that basis, so it becomes a betrayal if it ends up being we didn’t do what we promised, even though we never promised it. That’s the part that I find most disruptive about leaks – at some point they just become true in people’s minds, even though they’ve never been confirmed.

Sometimes I talk to people and they act as if various speculation and rumours are just already a confirmed thing, and then they start talking on that basis," Kumazawa told me. "I would like everyone to remember, let's calm down a bit - what we've shown you so far is everything we can say.
"People get frustrated with us, because even though we didn't promise things, the rumours and theories were such that they were widely believed."

This comes from our interview with director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazama at Tokyo Game Show 2025. We started by talking about Resident Evil: Requiem's new protagonist, Grace, and her differences from the more action-oriented Leon S. Kennedy. That led to a discussion of why the series was pulling back on the heavy action elements in Requiem, as Nakanishi explains

I think you can broadly classify Resident Evil titles on a scale of how much they're like Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 4. Resident Evil 7 was definitely on the 2 side of that, as it returned to survival horror roots and was very acclaimed for that. Resident Evil Village built on that and added in more action and gunplay and brought it toard the RE4 side of that particular scale. But if we kept going in that direction there's almost an inflation effect, where you have to keep adding more and more action to outdo the previous title, and by doing that you ultimately end up where Resident Evil 5 and 6 went, and although they're still great games, the general consensus is that they pushed Resident Evil so far in the action direction that it was no longer horror. I didn't want to have to do that with Resident Evil's ninth title where I just tried to outdo the action in Village and ended up making something I didn't want to make. Firmly swinging the scale toward the Resident Evil 2 style was our intention, and it's almost an upgrade of that Resident 2 style.
