Earlier today, we provided a small look at Yuuma Irvan, the human form of the dragon protagonist in Sega’s Shining Resonance for the PlayStation 3, courtesy of Famitsu. The print version of the magazine, as it turns out, introduces two more characters that you can expect to find in the musically-inclined RPG.
The first of these characters is Rinna Mayfield (voiced by Ai Kayano). An elven witch who specializes in wind magic and uses the Dragon Spine Tran Rod, a wind instrument, to do her business, she’s a Dragoner sent from the elven country of Wellant to help Astoria after it finds its island of Alfheim, a former dragon stronghold, besieged by the Lombardia Empire. Although a personable and bright person, deep down Rinna is said to possess a mischievous personality, with a sharp tongue to boot. As a friend of Kirika’s since childhoold, she happens to be one of the few people that can get close to her.
Joining Rinna is Fromage, an “Aural Spirit” that takes the shape of a penguin. Deemed to be the game’s mascot character, she’s written to be picky about music and while she won’t participate directly in combat, she nevertheless provides support by doling out apt advice.
A handful of additional details have also been made apparent about Yuuma as well. In battle, Yuuma occupies the swordsman class and fights with the Dragon Roar Blade Vanderhorn, which is described to be a partial manifestation of his latent power. Additionally, while he can revert to his dragon form at any time using the Vanderhorn as a catalyst, as we wrote previously, he can only do so in a “half-awakened state” in his Progress Body form, meaning that if he uses his powers too much, he’ll go out of control and go on a rampage.
The Armonics, the musical weapons that the Dragoners use to fight in Shining Resonance, are also briefly touched upon in the Famitsu article. Possessing power bestowed onto them from dragons in the distant past, it’s written that not only are they used in the game to cast magic, but they can also be used by players to give out orders to the party during combat, either as a whole or to individual members, with examples including being able to tell them to prioritize offense and to operate freely.
Shining Resonance is set to release for the PlayStation 3 in Japan on December 11.
Use Song Magic in a Real-Time Action Battle System
Break into battle seamlessly from the field. Once you make contact with a monster on the field, the game will seamlessly transition to battle. In the screenshots, you’ll see the heroes run into a “Manticore” beast. Once the battle begins, “Lizardmen” monsters come to its side for support.
During battle, you can freely control any one character from your party. In addition to your basic combo attacks, each character has its own special attacks and moves, and magic.
Yuuma’s basic attack is a large sword slash. His attack speed is not very fast, but a single shot will certainly deal damage. One of his special attacks is a dash thrust that pushes the enemy back. This is effective when surrounded by or trying to evade an enemy.
Kirika specializes in long-distance special attacks. Using her Dragon Wing Bow Kotonokagura, she can strike enemies with a Homing Scatter.
Sonia has a noble and nimble battle style, allowing her to easily evade enemy attacks when sensed.
Rinna, meanwhile, sports the Dragon Spine Tran Rod for her weapon, affording her the ability to blow enemies up into the area and summon large tornadoes to do her bidding.
As for Agnam, his Dragon Flame Wand Igryut, true to his name, dishes out lots and lots of fire attacks.
As Dragoners, by playing the magical Armonics weapons, players will be able to manipulate a variety of natural forces. While characters other than the one you have selected will operate on their own during battles and try to attack enemies and cover you, you can still give the remaining party members specific orders through your own Armonics with pinpoint accuracy, including ones such as telling them to prioritize attacking or to focus on healing, among other things.
Unique to Yuuma, he can unleash his inner powers and transform into a dragon, which can help turn the tide of battles. But if used for too long, you run the risk of losing control of his powers, resulting him going on a rampage. Learning how to balance these plusses and minuses and keep everything in check is therefore key to making the most out of Yuuma’s abilities.
