So my focus on this is to explain strengths and weaknesses that I see in each hero's play in HvV (Heroes vs Villains) I will state that my grammar is not perfect. I have seen so many say such in such is OP, or such and such is underwhelming, this is my thought. By no means an I correct on all of these, they are my opinion and open to debate/debunking.
I will start with heroes.
Luke
An odd hero, while not the fastest/strongest/most agile he is decent at all of those. Only okay at sticking and moving due to bad synergy with his abilities. I have had better battles with Luke playing cautiously with bursts of aggression. But overall a solid hero. 7/10
Abilities
1. Force Push - Amazing ability to push people off ledges, trap them in a corner, escape from multiple targets, and all around his best ability. Great ability to help teammates out of a CC, giving them time to recover. Very fast activation time and will "override" any force ability used at the same time except for Maul's throw, it will throw you both. True weakness with this ability when people use it incorrectly and push the target half way across the map and sometimes back to their teams. If you're not trapping an enemy in a tight space for the kill when they are the target, try not to use it, for you are giving them space to run or recover.
2. Repulse - All round Luke's weakest ability and very situational. Helps in a CC chain stun during a team battle if you're not the focus. Helps keep the target trapped after a force push, or setup a force push for a trap. I would like to see this ability reworked a bit since Luke already has a push. Weakness - Very long activation time and used incorrectly you can go from 100% to dead really fast.
3. Rush - This ability lacks sadly. It does not hit very hard and has very bad tracking, not a very smooth animation, and leaves Luke slightly exposed after he uses it. Useful to catch those trying to run but unlike Maul or Yoda, after a blocked attack, you can not use rush to do damage without trading damage. Needs a smoother animation and activate slightly faster. Needs small damage increase and slightly bigger hit box as he is rushing forward swinging his lightsaber around him, but only hits a very narrow path in front of him causing the ability to feel lack luster.
Leia
Very strong in HvV on some maps, while weaker in close quarters maps. Ok health pool, very strong pistol both main fire and secondary fire. Secondary fire is great for breaking blocking saber heroes or shooting down that Boba. Maps that it can track it targets on Leia seems to shine a bit more. Such as Endor, or starkiller base. While still solid on cqc like Hoth, she much more suited for larger outdoor maps. I give her a 6/10 on Close quarters maps and a 8/10 on larger maps. You average it
Abilities
1. Flash Grenade - It lacks in HvV a bit with experienced players. They really don't have an issue with finding you after you flash bang them, but can be decent vs inexperienced players or hitting that ranged Phasma or Boba so they have more of an issue hitting you at distance. You will need some practice throwing it long distanced.
2. Rapid Fire - Devastating up close vs ranged and Palpatine. But quickly loses it punch at medium to long range due to spread. Great for defeating saber wielders who swing wild at you while your defending yourself. Use defensively when you're being focused, or great for flanking behind those saber wielders and taking down Palpatine in matter of seconds.
3. Squad Shield - Almost useless on HvV except to counter that Sniping Phasma or Boba Rockets. Could be adjusted a little bit to be better. I am not sure what I would suggest. Possibly a 10% damage reduction when you come out of the shield for 1 second. Something small to give it a usefulness. But also put a timer on how many times you can gain damage reduction so Leia and friends can just walk back and forth. I have had some success using the shield to escape blaster villains on your tail by dropping the shield and letting it absorb blaster fire while your gain safety.
Chewbacca
Probably the strongest blaster on the hero side and very star card dependent for HvV. I think overall his shock grenade should not be able to shock them for 40% longer, this stacked with 12% increased damage makes many think he is too powerful. Because if you get flanked by Chewbacca and he hits you with both, you're probably going to die. He has high health pool but seems to take massive damage and can fall quickly. His true weakness are ranged chars. His bowcaster does decent damage at distance but can not outgun Phasma with a turret. His regular shot needs to lose splash damage while keeping it on Furous Bowcaster. A smart team can counter chewbacca and he is a very low skill char to play. 9/10 because the lack of skill needed to play Chewbacca.
Abilities
1. Shock Grenade - Single best CC in the HvV match up due to star cards. This can not be avoided which I think should be changed. You should be able to dodge his grenade, like you can Iden's droid. Has no counter.
2. Furious Bowcaster - Chewbaccas bread and butter attack. Very devastating due to damage and combo with Shock Grenade. The splash damage of this ability makes it amazing for taking down anyone close ranged and grouped. A real counter to this ability is to CC Chewbacca during FB making him "waste" the ability. This coupled with Shock Grenade causing an uproar that he is too powerful in HvV. I honestly think he's fine and where other Heroes need to be. Ability needs to be countered.
3. Charge Slam - Much better since the patch. Great for a CC stun in a team fight and to create distance between you and your attacker if needed. Chase down that Villain that has turned to run. I am not sure if this ability can be dodge, I have never successfully dodged it since the patch. Used well and you can knock people off ledges.
Dealing with Chewbacca - Special - First, you will be flanked by Chewbacca, he will stun you, you'll probably die if you're a low health villain, and it will be frustrating. You can't always know where he is. But dealing with him in a more common team battle is CCing/focusing Chewbacca makes him from “op” to a “joke” real fast. Time and time again have I seen people just rush in and try to face tank his furious bowcaster, this will get you killed and make you think it is an over powered ability. If your team is getting wrecked by Chewy, and no one seems to be ccing/keeping chewy busy, maybe you should counter him. I do this all the time with Kylo, vader, phasma etc. I will say this. Just because you scored 20k points and player B only scored 14k points, does not mean you did a better job than playber B in this game mode. Countering strong chars like Chewbacca means a lot more in small team play than points. This is why I wish the scoreboard stated “Died while target” and “Lived while target”
Han
Decent all around but does not excel in anything. His low health combined with aggressive playstyle needed puts Han in a weird spot. His main blaster does push the dps but he gets overwhelmed very easy. If you flank with Han or stick with Chewy, he can shine great and top the leaderboards in damage each time. But I have to give him a 6/10 overall due his bad abilities for HvV.
Abilities
Detonite Charge - Hands down his best ability for HvV. High damage output, can block break those saber villains, and blow people off ledges. I have seen this ability bugged out very badly, while I am using it, and fighting against Han. I have, as I have seen others do, throw multiple charges due to “staggering” and they all blow. Not to sure if all of them damag but have killed people and been killed outright by this.
Sharpshooter - High damage ability sure - but the penalty on speed makes it very very situationally. This ability can get you into trouble if used incorrectly due to speed and the loss of roll. For HvV and I am sure for GA - the speed penalty you receive is too great. If that doesn’t get changed, allow him to roll much like Finn does during his Buff.
Shoulder change - His shoulder charge can send people flying but is easy to block and avoid due to how slow he runs. If you do get blocked, you take damage as Han. This ability needs a rework in how functions. I hate to say it, should function more like Rey’s Dash.
Lando
Great at taking down Boba, Phasma, Bossk, and Palpatine but can struggle with saber villains if his shock is not available. Somewhat star card dependent and the buff he received was needed. His high health after star card upgrade can cause some to overestimate him and you get easy easy kills. Best used on larger maps that have decent cover but can shine on cq maps like Temple. Higher skilled needed to play him due to the recoil on his nightsniper and the need to get head shots during his CC. Very easy to counter with saber villains. Solid 7/10 due to “higher skill cap needed” to play.
Abilities
Smoke Grenade - Almost useless ability. Suppose to “stop tracking” saber attacks but doesn’t seem to be working. Use it to escape villains right on your tail by throwing it at your feet or a few feet in front of you. All around a stale and underwhelming ability.
Sharp Shot - Such an amazing ability since the patch giving it greater range. This ability can be dodge and LoSed. I like to combine it at the end of Disabler after I shoot them a few times with my main weapon. Great for hitting Boba out of the sky or finishing off those running villains. Weakness that you walk slow/can’t roll is a needed for this ability and you should use it when ever it’s up and not save it for “groups.”
Disabler - Decent CC and combined with high damage of his weapon can swing a tide of battle quickly. Something to note on this ability, you can throw it while you're firing so no need to stop shooting just to throw or use ability. Also which i think is a bug, if you get stunned or CCed and disabler is out, you can activate it to counter the CC if they are standing in it.
Rey
You’re a monster. That is all. She hands down is the best saber wielder in the game, even over Maul. She’s hard to counter due to abilities that give both great offence and robust defense. Has a very high rate of attack and no true weakness except what all saber wielders have. Explosion damage. Very easy gets a 10/10 due to smooth animations and char design.
Abilities
Dash Strike - Great for ambushing, catching a runner, knocking someone over, and breaking a block. Hitting someone with Dash Strike and instantly going into an attack is devistating to say the least, you can get a good 3 hits in before they even stand up. Causing this to be in my opinion, her best ability. It is only “good” for running due to anything she steps on will stop the animation. Can be avoided by a well timed jump and opened to a back attack if the player is not careful.
Insight - Over all pretty powerful. Border line OP. It gives her unlimited stamina, ability to see through walls and gives this to the rest of the team. It allows for endless blaster/saber defense/strikes. Again I wouldn’t mess with this ability too much but would add time to the CD as a slight nerf. Coupled with star card, it’s almost always off CD and useable.
Mind Trick- Unblockable ability that causes your controls to go inverted. The silence removal was needed for it was too powerful before. I still think this ability should be blockable by saber villains but has quite the animation and leaves rey open to attack if they use it at the wrong time. Very powerful for running with Rey and causing a gap letting you easily get away.
Yoda
Very high skill needed in HvV. Which is so different than GA, causing many to believe Yoda is sub par. While he may be the weakest saber wielder in HvV, my view on him has changed so much since I have gotten “good” with Yoda. Very fast deflection recovery but no ability to block, lowest damage of all saber wielders even after fully upgraded star card. Buff to Dash attack was needed and used correctly is really his main attack. Great buffing ability, but can be very easily taken down if overwhelmed by multiple attackers. Flaking with Yoda, or ambushing with him, shows how well he can be played. A lot of people seem to focus Yoda because they believe he is an easy target. But using your dodging, blocking (to deflect force abilities and keep ranged at bay) and a bit of smart gameplay, your team will run through them in a team fight. Yoda is not a scoring monster by any means, but can be vital to a team. If you keep that in mind, while survival and well timed strikes are your friend, a well played Yoda can take out anyone besides Boba and Phasma. Yes including the mighty Palp and Vader. Jumping right before you attack allows for a greater lunge in the attack. But sadly, even though I love him to death, I give him a 4/10 only due to skill cap needed to play him. So many play him poorly that is hinders your team and pick him only due to him having a saber.
Abilities
Unleash - Powerful when charged up, but hardly ever gets there due to teams mostly playing 3 saber users on villains side. Weak in HvV due to this but great for knocking people off ledges. But if you do get it charged, it can surprise people how powerful the damage can be.
Presence - Great for starting a team fight, or thrusting up the defense of your target. Use at the correct time can swing a battle and should be used while attacking, cced, in a jump, to clip the animation of it. Great to stack with Finn’s ability also.
Dash Attack - I think the 3 dashes is a must for Yoda in HvV. One it helps him “get away” when he is the target. Two, is unblockable and great to use after a deflection of a block. Yoda recovers fast and you will push 130 damage in the face of the blocker, just remember to try to spin around hit them again to cause perm damage. Takes some time to get used too/skill.
Finn
Best single target sustained DPS out of all the ranged. Low health pool but powerful abilities puts Finn in the upper part of the heroes. A very well designed char but very weak vs saber villains due to no block beaker/cc. He can become overwhelmed by any of them with ease. Even being a rollie pollie can’t save Finn from saber users. It would feel like he takes out Phasma easy, but a well played Phasma will eat a well played Finn up. So he does have some weaknesses. 9/10 on hero scale and very easy char to use.
Abilities
Deadeye - The mighty deadeye, bane for any ranged villain and death to Boba and Palpatine. High damaging ability that “can’t miss” I think this ability needs a slight nerf in CD. Make it slightly longer.
Big Deal isn’t as OP in HvV as it is in GA. But letting Lando, Leia, or Han shoot for days without the need to Cool off weapons makes it a worthy buff. I still feel this ability should of went to Phasma and Finn should of gotten what Phasma has, but ohh well. This ability will slow Big Deal Finn down to a trot, but he can still roll. You can use Big Deal together with Deadeye.
Undercover Team - I find this ability quite useless in HvV. It’s good to give your team a slight speed buff, and reveal them on the map once you’re close enough, but the damage he puts out is very sub par. I use this to get my team to area we want to setup faster but will quickly turn it off. You can not use Big Deal during UT.
Villains
Boba Rocket Barrage Fett
A great choice for a villain due to his ability to fly and his mighty rocket barrage. He has the single highest burst damage in the game but is countered by his main weapon being a little lackluster, it is very good med to close range. But at a trade off that you can not take very many hits as Boba. The nerf to his jet pack seems to be the hardest hit by Boba and now, if you use For The Hunt with nothing in the tank, it won’t refill at all while the ability is active. Either fix this or allow For the Hunt to give 5% jetpack fuel as a quick fix. He is very star card depending in HvV but gets a 9/10 and new player friendly. If Boba is giving you fits, use, Chewy or Finn to easily dispatch him.
Abilities
Concussion Rocket - Much like any other blinding ability it just doesn’t stand up in HvV vs seasoned players. Any and all types of this ability are pretty useless in HvV.
For The Hunt - I think this ability needs a big buff. It needs to be Rey’s counter to insight. Sure the CD can stay the same, but it should pierce walls and allow that mighty wall hack like she does. This should also display to everyone like Rey’s insight or insight needs to be nerfed and a star card added to give this ability to the team.
Rocket Barrage - The pony show. The one tick Boba has to deal massive damage in a short time. You can someone counter this by dodging but you’ll take some damage. Knowing the best you can when the last time he used it/died and you can dip behind something to lessen or completely make this ability miss.
Bossk
Much like Yoda, Bossk has a much higher skillplay in HvV than he does in GA. You will need to use everything at your disposal to be truly effective. His charge on his main weapon is good for open maps but his hipfire seems to do better 90% of the time. Forcing players to walk over your mines and using Predator Instincts correctly causes Bossk to go from a bottom villain to a mid to high villain. He is the only hero that fully regens and is wise sometimes to retreat to gain back your full hp. He takes massive damage and can be overwhelmed by any other hero quickly. I am only giving him a 5/10 due to high skillcap and teamplay needed to make him a top tier contender.
Abilities
Dioxis Grenade - I think a very overlooked and underutilized ability. Great to throw down on top of your mines and into team fights. Soften up the targets for easier perm damage, and for your mines to finish them off.
Predator Instincts This can be a hit or miss ability. Sometimes I can’t see their heat outline which I think needs a fix badly. Sometimes it’s better to “miss them” and let them walk over a group of your nades than to hit them. Great for team fights and makes you move faster. Very long animation time so if used at the wrong time will get you killed.
Proximity Mines - I think in HvV these are very star card dependant for activation time. You can set down some mines and have heroes walk over them, just to throw more and very quickly they die to the second round of your mines. I have killed a team of 4 running after me this way.
Darth Vader
I think they really got Vader correct. High survivability, slower speed. Great buffing to damage, and his only real weakness is staggering. If hit in the back, he seems to have a greater staggering animation than other heroes or villains. One thing that needs to be fixed right now is his glitch on Choke. Either it sends them across the map, gives the player an instant headache, or down right kills them in one hit, these three things sometimes are gamebreaking and causes a team to win or lose. Nothing like walking up to a team of 4 and hitting choke while you’re behind them, and they all die instant. Looking like a hacker, it’s not great gameplay for sure. Funny yes, but needs fixed. 7/10 until bugs get fixed.
Lightsaber throw - Deadly when you hit them twice, great for peeking around a corner and throwing it then dashing to the side. No real drawback to this ability for it’s quick, but ranged can still get in some free shots while your lightsaber is away.
Focused Rage - The “I want you dead, and you will die” ability. Use this with a jump and a lightsaber throw to clip the animation of your grabbing your fist. Only real drawback of this ability, f you don’t clip the animation, you waste 2 seconds of your FR.
Choke - Great when it works, but leaves you exposed. The buggiest skill in the game and I don’t have much to say about it until it gets fixed. You can one shot people with it, throw them across map and not mean too, or it just does’t work at all and you instantly drop them. Fun to drag a group of heroes and drop them off ledges but until it is fixed, i really hate using it. Using this ability at the wrong time will get you killed.
Palpatine
Bane of any saber wielder and wall hider alike, opposite can be said for the exploiters who will sit back and just shoot you through the wall to death. Even I am guilty of that and it needs to be fixed asap. Far as that goes, he is the single best support in the game. His abilities mess so well for HvV you can take out a whole team with ease if they do not focus down Palpatine. Beware of range chars, this is your weakness and all of them will absolutely wreck Palpatine. He is very star card dependant for main attack range and stamina use. I am only giving him a 7/10 also until the lightning is fixed and can no longer go through solid objects.
Abilities
Chain Lightning - Great for healing up Palp if you use that star card and does decent damage. Great for finishing off them runners. You can block this ability pretty easy and will stop it from spreading if you do.
Dark Aura - Everyone hates this ability. Causes players to slow down/can’t jump plus unavoidable damage. I think Yoda should be able to charge unleashed with this ability as he should be the saber counter to Palpatine. This too needs to stop going through walls. Fix.
Electrocute - Amazing when it works, if it works, when… if… almost never works. Can be blocked and is quite the buggy skill. Great for CCing whole teams.
Again dealing with Palpatine is quite easy. If he is giving you trouble and your a saber wielder, your ranged isn’t taking him out, switch to a ranged char and absolutely wreck him. It’s really that simple. But you stubborn people think I am a saber wielder, I should wreck all. He is designed as your counter, play to counter him.
Kylo
My favorite villain so I might be a bit bias with this review here. While not great for GA he is amazing for HvV. Two CCing abilities and one that can throw off ledges. Weapon damage with star card is amazing, but sadly he is not a scoring monster and has the slowest attack of all the saber users. If you use him as I do an more of a support type that controls the battlefield, you don’t often top the charts, but you can. Flanking with Kylo is easy and Freezing the whole team while Boba rockets them to death never ever gets old. Followed by a well time vader choke. We have coordinated many times to setup this way when a team rushes and have caused whole teams to quit after the first kill. His weakness are blaster heroes. They just seem to eat him alive if you’re not careful. Rey’s dash if hits you from behind and they are a good rey player, you will not standup. You’re dead. So Kylo feels a bit squishy. I still wouldn't’ change anything on him. I give him a solid 8/10.
Abilities
Pull - Now I use the epic 50 damage star card for pull, one reason why, many saber heroes will run when they get low HP, 200 or less. So when I pull them, 50 damage which is not a lot, but it allows for 2 strikes before they stand up either with frenzy or if they land at my feet just regular attack and finishes them off, sure you can say, well if they 200 your saber strikes will kill them anyway, not all the time it seems, sometimes it takes more (possibly they ran with 200+ health) Also I have killed countless number of heroes that are low HP just with the pull itself.
Frenzy - The, you’ll get yourself killed ability. Yes it is that, it has a huge draw back that you can not cancel the animation. You have to use it perfectly or you can take some serious damage or outright die. I use it a lot with pull, freeze, or if they are running away and pull is not up. Careful with this ability. Also it can be buggy and you just go off in a random direction even though someone is right next to you. Use this ability only when you know you can.
Freeze - Best CC on the villains side with star card. Can be blocked and gives your team a huge advantage in team fights. Great for countering them heroes like Finn and Chewbacca. Short animation and this ability has no real drawbacks.
Phasma
Playing Phasma takes skill and knowing when to use what ability. Her low damage on her main weapon makes her feel underpowered. While I agree, a slight increase in her main damage wouldn’t hurt, she possibly doesn’t need it. Fun level can get stale because the amount of camping that needs to be done when you’re the target for you can fall very quickly to saber wielders if your turret is destroyed on cool down. Overall I give her a 5/10 due to her staff being useless in it’s current form.
Abilities
Staff Strikes - Where to begin with this ability. They seem to want it so you knock someone away, but have a star card that the 3 hit, hits harder, but have no lunge….. This ability just needs a slight rework. Some have suggested it like the trench gun from 2015 but all I think it needs is a lunge/faster animation added with the knock back gone and it knocks them over or away on 3rd hit. Make it more like saber stikes kind of but needs to be a lot quicker.
Survivor - Amazing ability with damage reduction and more health, but completely reliant on star cards to do anything meaningful. Use this ability in roll if you can to clip the animation.
Droid - First off, needs double the HP. It is to easily destroyed by 3 saber swings OR, make it so if a saber user destroyed it, it does splash damage. The manual detonation does abysmal damage to heroes and never worth it. The CC chain it can cause vs anyone is amazing and this ability has potential. Small tweak in damage output and health and this droid can be the one we are looking for.
Darth Maul
Hands down the best villain saber users and absolutely a terror in proper hands. Maul can run forever and never be caught when he is the target allowing for an easy point when he is. People are saying he needs a block, and he does not. He is perfect in what he is. Both in HvV and GA. He gets in, does massive damage, and can get out without taking hardly any. I hate facing a skilled Maul because of how good of a design he is. 10/10 I would change nothing on him.
Abilities
Furious Throw - Better than Vader’s in every way, both in damage and speed. Using it with a dash can hit whole teams at least once. No real downside to using it because he can not block anyway.
Choke Hold - Best throw in the game, You can direct it where you want 90% of the time and is great for escaping if needed. Has a huge animation time so you can get yourself into trouble if you miss but follow it up with a spin attack in any direction really will help your survivability.
Spin Attack - Your blaster blocker, great finisher, closing distance, anything you can think of with this attack, you can pretty much do. Get away from them pesky saber heroes, or finish a fight. The animation is quick and you can usually do both spin attacks before the other person can even turn around.
Iden
I left Iden for last because I think she is just a mess. The only good thing she has for HvV is her secondary fire. Which is amazing when your dueling a saber wielder up close and you roll while aiming at their feet queing up that ball of awesomeness. Everything else is garbage. Down right unreliable. But she is decent for GA. Her main fire is quite nice at close to med range and will melt heads if you’re a good shot. I don’t think they can do much with her without breaking GA. for HvV I give her a 2/10.
Abilities
Stun Droid - Almost never works, takes forever, can be dodge, but if it does hit, you have a small window to attack. Even with star cards this ability just doesn’t do what it should. Should be quicker on finding targets and kind of act like Phasma’s droid but for a short time.
Pulse Cannon - Charge time takes way to long for HvV and if you do score a head shot, it does next to no damage. Not worth even using ever, like ever, ever.
Droid Shield - Only good against - Finn, Han, and Leia (not secondary fire). Everything else eats threw it like butter. Needs to block all damage but melee and saber strikes. Then it can be somewhat useful. Since it can’t be used if Stun Droid is out, it needs a better output when you can use it.
This is my review of all the chars. Some I am sure are a bit bias but I am fine with that. No one is truly OP in HvV. Chewbacca - Boba - Palp - Maul - Rey - and Finn are all on the strong side sure, but they are where the rest of heroes and villains need to be.
