Got Descent (DX1) Rebirth (Source port of the original) up and running on Deck. Native resolution, upgraded assets, 60fps, colored lighting - basically a Descent remaster:
If anyone's interested:
- Buy the original game on Steam or GOG - never seems to dip much below where it's at right now (~8 bucks)
- Install as usual
- Go to Desktop mode, navigate to this site on your browser of choice, and grab the Windows version of DX1 Rebirth. Extract the contents to it's own folder (named "Descent Rebirth" or something similar, wherever you want, but not the main game's install folder)
- Navigate to the main game's install folder (Steam - Right click game - Browse local files)
- Copy descent.hog and descent.pig from here, and then paste them into your "Descent Rebirth" folder"
- Add the d1x-rebirth.exe to Steam, set a proton version (I used GE-Proton8-21 but I imagine it doesn't matter too much)
- Switch to game mode, add custom library art using SteamGridDB (like a civilized person
), and enjoy!
You can actually uninstall the Steam Descent entry now, as you just needed those files. I'm using a community config "Descent template" and then I further customized the in-game controls (forward, reverse, and strafing on the left stick mainly). Enabling gyro adds a really nice element as well in here, but mileage may vary on how much people like gyro.
With my current control layout, the game's actually incredibly playable, I'm loving it. Only weird issue is music doesn't seem to be playing, and I'm not sure why, though I seem to recall Descent maybe didn't have any during levels? Any suggestions on that, feel free to send them my way - there seems to be downloadable sountracks that you can play by jukebox but I should be getting at least the midi music.
