With all that being said, I enjoyed Alone in the Dark from Edward’s perspective and plan to go through the game again as Jodie Comer’s character to see if any more depth is added. I don’t feel I can reliably advocate for buying Alone in the Dark at full price, though. It’s not terrible, but there’s just something lacking that doesn’t allow the player to experience satisfaction at any point throughout the story.

With its reality-bending story, parade of puzzles, and unwieldy combat, Alone in the Dark is, in some ways, more faithful to some turn-of-the-century horror games than their own revitalized modern remakes. I enjoyed the game's story, setting, and abundant lore, and I felt smart when I'd overcome some of its puzzles. But others proved so obtuse as to be frustrating, and nothing about the combat even climbs to a level I'd call serviceable--it's consistently poor. This isn't Alone in the Dark's first revival attempt, and it's probably not its last, but it isn't the one that will put the series' name in the same breath as the all-time greats it originally helped inspire.

Fortunately, while there are elements of Alone in the Dark that may feel a little bit cheap, this is a rich world to get lost in for a dozen hours, and something a little bit different in a rather bustling space. It’s good to see the series again, so here’s hoping it’s not left alone for quite so long next time.

There are too many flaws at the heart of Pieces Interactive's Alone in the Dark reboot for a blanket recommendation, but anyone with a love for classic survival horror gameplay should — after a few post-launch patches at least — find a relatively worthwhile experience. The combat sections are awful and there's very little to actually spook you, but the puzzle-solving gameplay at the game's core shines. For that alone, it'll find just enough of an audience ready and willing to love it.

What is clear is Pisces' palpable love for the source material. Not only do certain areas of Derceto boast the same furniture and colours as the original game, but we're treated to a joyous little throwback near the end of the adventure that will feel instantly familiar to anyone who remembers survival horror the first time around. But it's not enough. Curious collectibles and an obvious adoration for the original games aside, Alone in the Dark is too glitchy, too tedious, and too unpolished in ways that genuinely detract from the stunning set designs and Hollywood cast. It's not that Alone in the Dark needs to be all singing and all dancing – it doesn't have to have stellar gunplay and terrifying creature design or challenging puzzles – but if you're putting all those things into a game, they at least need to work. They need to feel robust and meaningful. You shouldn't have to dread seeing an enemy in the distance, not because you're scared, but because you're never sure if Carnby's inability to shoot is going to get you killed this time.

Stevivor 3.5. I soliti esagerari :sard:

in pratica lo shooting e il comparto tecnico le grosse note dolenti . Leggo invece di narrativa di livello .

7.5 era davvero il Best Case Scenario :asd:

The 2024 Alone in the Dark is a deeply flawed game, but at least it's never boring. The first playthrough is fun despite its issues, mostly thanks to the campy story, and exploring Derceto is rewarding, even with the simplistic puzzles. The second playthrough is where it becomes apparent that there isn't much to the game. At best, it's an incredibly basic and generic survival-horror game that's stuck in the past, and at worst, it's buggy and doesn't justify its $60 price tag.

On a structural level, however, there are design choices here that we simply couldn’t get along with, and as such, we now find ourselves hoping that maybe one day – likely in the distant future – a fourth Alone in the Dark reboot will nail it.

https://www.gamesradar.com/alone-in-the-dark-review-2024/There are some nice locations, simply because anything with an early 19th century Southern Gothic feel is a goldmine for horror. While a few early puzzles and objectives add a pleasing satisfaction to the detective work needed as you cross-reference notes and other information. And there is an interesting shape to the wafty fumes of the story that suggest there was something meatier there originally. But the way it all comes together lacks the life or coherence needed to give it any momentum or drive - all too often it simply feels like a sequence of events stacked together to fill out its nine-ish hour run time. (There are minor variations depending on which character you choose, but nothing hugely meaningful from what I've played.) The result is a fragmented tale that never really finds its feet, or hits any of the horror high notes it needs to sing.

Alone in the Dark is a success in more ways than it's not. There are notable issues preventing it from reaching that upper echelon but nonetheless developer Pieces Interactive has crafted an engaging experience with enough charm that fans of the series, or indeed the genre, will no doubt lap up.
