Blueside’s Kingdom Under Fire II has been quietly bubbling under in public eye for some time. Officially revealed back in 2008, a steady drip-feed of information, artwork and screenshots teased us with what could be a groundbreaking Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) experience, culminating in the first discussions of when we might actually get to play the game late last year with the launch of a closed beta test in Korea. Now, Blueside have revealed new details on some of the important mechanics of the game, the recently announced PlayStation 3 versions and its western roll-out.
As the fifth title in the Kingdom Under Fire series, Kingdom Under Fire II continues the story of Kendal and Regnier, who were sucked into the body of Encablossa. Players will take to the battlefield as their favourite hero, commanding their armed forces against the huge might of the Encablossians, now under the command Electronic Theatre Imageof Regnier. More details on this, and other aspects a can be found in the Question and Answer (Q&A) session below, courtesy of Blueside’s Region Manager Mile Lee. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on Kingdom Under Fire II.

Electronic Theatre: It has previously been revealed that a number of the characters in Kingdom Under Fire II will be descendants of the main stars of previous Kingdom Under Fire titles. Could you possibly offer more detail on their background, and the legacy of their ancestors?

Blueside: There are old and new characters that are making an appearance in Kingdom Under Fire II. Glen for example is the son of Gerald and Ellen. Of course, Gerald and Ellen were two of the heroes that appeared in the Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders, and they felt in love and had a child, and that’s Glen. Glen’s actually over fifty years old but since he’s a half elf, he doesn’t get old so he looks as if he’s in thirties. Isabella, another character that is making her appearance for the first time in the franchise is a dark elf but she has white skin because she is an albino. Regnier on the other hand is a good example of the characters that are making a comeback from the previous titles of the series. He’s been around ever since the franchise began, but now he looks quite different from before because he went through a mutation while he was inside Encablossa, and he now has very distorted and twisted looks. There are many other interesting characters in the game, but for now, I’ll leave the rest for later.

Electronic Theatre: How will these characters progress during play? It has been said that Kingdom Under Fire II will feature an RPG element, but little has been revealed as to how this will affect play.

Blueside: The Kingdom Under Fire franchise has been known for its unique Action RTS genre but in Kingdom Under Fire II we’re introducing elements new to the series such as, as you mentioned, RPG elements. In the PC online version of Kingdom Under Fire II, there will be familiar online RPG game elements such as towns, quests, guilds, shops and so on. You can customise your hero character and level up by completing quests, defeating other players in battles, or equipping better armours and weapons. We have a world map in the game, and when you first begin the game, you actually have to walk on the ground to travel place to place, and there will be many encounters hidden and when triggered, monsters and whatnot appear and you have to defeat them. However when you reach a certain level, you can buy a mothership and fly on it and you can travel to a place much further in a lot shorter time. You can also upgrade your motherships or get rewarded with more advanced ones by completing a quest, defeating other player and so on.

Electronic Theatre: A new playable faction, the Encablossa has been revealed, could you possibly offer more details on how this all-new army will play?

Blueside: Encablossians actually play a very important role in the game, and they’re also one of the most powerful factions in the region. With Regnier being their leader, just like him, Encablossians all have very twisted and mutated appearance, and their origin is not known. Some people claim that while the diastrophism was taking place, they managed to make their way through the crack caused by it. More details on the faction will be revealed as we move forward.

Electronic Theatre: Many elements of Kingdom Under Fire’s storyline appear to be almost related to that of Ninety-Nine Nights (N3). Was that your intention, and are we likely to see a cross-over between the two franchises at any point?

Blueside: We don’t have anything to do with Ninety-Nine Nights franchise anymore, and if the storyline of Kingdom Under Fire II appears to be related to N3, we have to say that wasn’t our intention, and we have no plan to associate Kingdom Under Fire II with N3 in the future.

Electronic Theatre: Kingdom Under Fire II is about huge, epic battles both on- and offline. What major issues have you had to overcome in order to create such detailed scenes on a grand scale?

Blueside: One of the major issues was its networking aspect. Since Kingdom Under Fire II’s known for its massive battles with thousands of units at one screen going at each other, the number one priority for us was to deliver very stable gameplay without any kind of lag. Thanks to our talented devs we were able to implement very stable gameplay without any kind of network problem.

Electronic Theatre: It’s been suggested previously that the console version of Kingdom Under Fire II will differ significantly from the PC version. Could you offer some more details on the differences between the two builds?

Blueside: The PC version will have all the MMO elements such as forming a guild, crafting your weapons, interacting and trading items with other players, and so on, but it will of course stay true to its Action RTS basis as Electronic Theatre Imagewhen you actually get into a battle all the familiar ARTS elements that were in the Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders and Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes will be all there. The PlayStation 3 version will be almost exactly like its PC counterpart except that all the online elements are presented through PlayStation Network.

Electronic Theatre: We know that Kingdom Under Fire II will feature both PvE and PvP gameplay, but could you offer more details on the different gameplay modes that will be available?

Blueside: Aside from PvE and PvP, the player will be able enjoy numerous quests some of which are based on the main storyline, and some of which are separate from it. We’re also considering game modes such as time attack, raids, and so on as a lot of ideas are being raised in our dev. team. More details will be revealed down the road.

Electronic Theatre: Will the Kingdom Under Fire II closed beta test (CBT) be available for Kingdom Under Fire fans in Europe?

Blueside: We’re guessing that CBT in Europe will take place sometime in this year, and we have a plan to release more details on the schedule for the regions outside of Korea after the Korean CBT.

Electronic Theatre: Have there been any decisions made about the future support of Kingdom Under Fire II as an MMO? Will there be a monthly subscription fee?

Blueside: It will be a Free-to-Play game so that everyone can experience the game. We’ve decided micro-transaction mode would fit better for the game, so that’s our plan.

Electronic Theatre: How far along in development would you say you are? When are European gamers likely to be able to get their hands on the game?

Blueside: Well, we’re going to do an open beta test perhaps in the summer of 2011. We’re doing the best we can to get the game out in Europe as early as possible and we think the fans in Europe will get their hands on the game probably late 2011.
