Sony Group Corp.'s PlayStation pulled out of an upcoming game by the well-known designer Hideo Kojima because of concerns over budget, potential profitability and exclusivity, according to people familiar with the project.

One major factor behind the decision was the commercial performance of Kojima's previous two games, Death Stranding and its sequel, which didn't meet PlayStation's revenue expectations, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing information that's not public.

But the new project has also missed deadlines and was on track to be well over budget despite being years away from release, the people said. In addition, PlayStation was reluctant to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in another game that wouldn't remain permanently exclusive to the company's own hardware. Both Death Stranding games were "timed" PlayStation exclusives that were later released on other platforms. Kojima's closely held studio, Kojima Productions, retained ownership of the franchises.

Xbox, which has been facing its own overhaul under new Chief Executive Officer Asha Sharma, saw Physint as a good investment opportunity for several reasons, according to people familiar with the company's strategy.

One key factor is the PC platform, where the Death Stranding games have generated some revenue. Earlier this year, Sony decided it will no longer release single-player PlayStation games on PC, Bloomberg reported. Sony would therefore not benefit when Kojima Productions released a PC version of Physint on its own or with a different publisher, as it did for the first Death Stranding. But Xbox releases all of its games on PCs and plans to publish Physint on PC and Xbox, said the people.

The deal will also include film and television rights for both Physint and a second title from Kojima Productions, the experimental horror game OD. Sharma has said that expanding Xbox's properties to linear media is a significant part of her strategy.

Here's what Vinit said in the interview:

TLOU Factions development lasted for 7 years (So started after Uncharted 4 concluded)
When covid started and people working at home started playing a lot more online games with their friends, Sony and all other publishers put a lot of money into Online game which increased Factions budget considerably
In 2022/2023 people came back to work at the office and online gaming engagement dropped considerably, and investment in gaming dropped in turn.
How Vinit positions it, it became essentially a question of "are we making this game, or are we making Neil's next game Intergalactic", which kinda reaffirms ND's statement that the support needed to maintain the game was too high to actually be able to make new games.
At the point of cancellation, the game was around 80% complete.

He doesn't go into detail as to what the game was, but he compares real life events as the inspirations for the game, in a way that to me sounds a lot like an Extraction Shooter, essentially fighting each other for resources.

He now owns a game studio in Japan, and is making a new game with a 90s anime aesthetic, is gritty and mature but with that anime styling.

Last very interesting thing he mentioned: After the cancellation he stayed at Naughty Dog for another year, working as a "Game Director on one of their future games", way he put it did not sound like Intergalactic to me at all. ND have also previously said when Factions was cancelled that they have 2 SP games in development.

Porca troia 7 anni :morris2:

Gioco cancellato all'80% di completamento :ahsn:

Dovremmo andare a fare caccia di post su era in quel biennio.

Sono stati stupidi, avessero assunto 1000 persone avrebbero potuto fare quello e molti altri giochi. :sisi: Costo di gestione 1B all'anno.

  • Seems Naughty Dog have been developing another game beside Intergalactic for at least 3 years now which Vinit was a temporary Game Director after the cancellation for a year until he left to create his own studio.
