Capcom President Tsujimoto: When Sony told us about the PS4, I was convinced the way games are sold would change 180 degrees

Early Adoption of Digital Sales Created the Flexibility Capcom Has Today

Famitsu:
In recent years, Capcom has been actively working on revivals of older properties such as Onimusha, Okami, and Mega Man. Could you tell us about the thinking behind this and your future plans?

Tsujimoto:
First, I'd like to explain why we're able to pursue these initiatives now.

We had wanted to revive these dormant IPs for quite some time, but our development resources were limited. Simply put, we didn't have enough people.

What changed was that around 2017, Capcom began making a serious shift toward digital sales.

When the PS4 was being introduced, Sony Interactive Entertainment told us that: "The PS4 will be a machine that is constantly connected to the internet."

They explained that if this vision took hold, services such as the PlayStation Store would become much more comprehensive and important than before.

From the moment I heard that, I became convinced that: "The way video games are sold is going to change completely."

Famitsu:
What exactly did you mean by that?

Tsujimoto:
Up until then, the dominant business model was to sell games to retailers, who would then sell them to customers. If a store decided, "We're not carrying this anymore," then the game would effectively disappear from store shelves. That was the standard way of selling games.

With digital distribution, however, we can deliver games directly to customers ourselves.

Starting with Resident Evil 7 in January 2017, we began seriously pursuing this strategy. Even now, in its ninth year on the market, Resident Evil 7 continues to sell. In 2025 alone, it sold 2.6 million copies.

The game's development costs were amortized within its first two years. Since the third year onward, its sales have largely accumulated as profit.

This has become one of the major sources of Capcom's profits today.

Famitsu:
So the stability of that cash flow made it possible to invest in new projects?

Tsujimoto:
Exactly.

Both the Resident Evil and Monster Hunter series continue generating profits because older titles keep selling year after year.

As those profits accumulate, we gain more flexibility in development.

That flexibility allows us to spend years creating entirely new IPs like Pragmata. It also lets us dedicate staff to dormant franchises and establish a cycle where those projects can be revived.

In addition, we hire more than 150 new graduates every year. After two or three years, those employees grow into core contributors on our various projects.

Right now, our workforce has expanded significantly, and we've built what is arguably our ideal development structure, one that allows multiple development teams and projects to proceed simultaneously.

:asd:)

Anyway, buon 43° mamma Capcom :hall:
