Wolfenstein confirmed for 2009
Not that we're surprised at all - but it's always good to get confirmation nevertheless - Activision revealed at a presentation for analysts yesterday, that Wolfenstein will be released sometime in 2009. We've supposed that the game would be released in 2009 since the http://www.wolfenstein.com website opened with a line at the bottom of the site saying " © 2009 id Software, Inc".
In 2009, the game has been in development for 5 years, which makes you wonder what on earth they've been doing all that time. Doom 3 took about the same time to develop, and that even had to have an entirely new engine built for it. Wolfenstein is based on existing technology, albeit heavily modified. I think that either they've just been incredibly slow, the game has been incredibly complex to make, or they scrapped the game at some point during development and started all over.
A 2009 release could prove complicated, as it is based on id tech 4: So far, the graphics of Wolfenstein look dumbed down to suit consoles (lower polygon count, lower res textures). Granted, there is room for improvement, but we have to remember that Wolfenstein is primarily developed for consoles, and id tech 4 has a history of VERY bad console ports, with the ET:QW console ports fresh in our memories. (They probably cut down on visuals in Wolfenstein until they made the engine run smoothly).
A 2009 release with a seemingly outdated engine could result in terrible reviews of Wolfenstein, as most people out there (especially the console people) base their opinion on a game almost exclusively on the appearance and not the gameplay. As with everything else about Wolfenstein, however, it's just too early to judge the graphics, as we haven't seen any in-game footage representing the final game.
