Rumours of Sony's PS4 virtual reality headset have been running rife since last year, but now an inside source has told TechRadar that they've spent some time with the helmet behind closed doors - and it's almost ready to be revealed.
Our confidential tipster said that they were impressed with the quality of Sony's Oculus Rift competitor. "The quality and resolution are really, really good," they said. "People will definitely be impressed with what Sony's built".

They also told us that they understand Sony plans to announce the headset at GDC 2014, which kicks off in San Francisco on March 17.

Sony announces Project Morpheus, a virtual reality technology coming to PlayStation:

Sony is pursuing new virtual reality technology for its PlayStation brand, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida announced at GDC 2014 today.
"The industry has grown by creating technological advancements for video game players," he said. "Advancements that people maybe weren't expecting or thought was possible." PlayStation, he said, is focused on "pushing the boundary of play," and "it's this focus that drives how we innovate and create the experiences we deliver to gamers."

Some of those technologies, like Blu-ray, have since become standards.

"Virtual reality is the next innovation from PlayStation that will [shape] the future of games," Yoshida said.

Yoshida showed a short demonstration of Sony's virtual reality technology, using a modified version of God of War seen from first-person, as well as some hardware prototypes that date back to 2010. Using a combination of Sony's own hardware, combining personal video viewers with PlayStation Move controllers, PlayStation engineers experimented with multiple prototypes.

Sony unveiled its VR technology efforts at a Game Developers Conference panel, "Driving the Future of Innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment," lead by Yoshida, senior director of research and development at Sony Computer Entertainment America Richard Marks and Anton Mikhailov, senior software engineer at SCEA R&D.

'We believe Morpheus will further enhance PlayStation'. It'll work alongside the camera, and Move.
It's still a prototype, though.

PS Move's technology is being used in Project Morpheus to help with tracking. PlayStation Camera on PS4 is also essential. "It's almost as if it was designed for VR," he said with a wink.

They're using the same tech as PlayStation Move - with a lot higher rate sensors, and the PlayStation Camera.

DualShock 4's sensors and light can be used in conjunction with Morpheus. PS Move may also prove essential.

They want it to be able to be picked up and used with no issues. Pick it up, put it on, you're in VR. Put it down, you're out. No issues.

Finally, we've come to Content. "At Worldwide Studios, we have a really good team." Sony's own studios will "seed" the VR landscape, but they need other devs, hence they're here at GDC.
